How do I know for sure what frequency this amp is tuned for? 10 or 11 meter? Amp has distorted audio and I do not know how to resolve this.
It has one 6LX6 driving four 8908 tubes.

DECREASE the drive and see what it does it is a CB/10 meter amp.

I agree with Bruce decrease your drive say 3 to 4 watts dead key and I keep reminding guys what ever the stated wattage rating the truth is about 2/3 rds that, to safely keep finals or tubes happy. People will learn over time like I have you drive the amp to the wattage stated and the Techs will love you in short time. Tube are not cheap I Have a Siltronix LA-550 one driving four all 8950's and yes I have stocked up when possible Ouch! |

OK, now that we know it is a CB/10 meter amp. Can it be fine tuned for lets say, 27.000 MHz as mid band instead of 28.000 MHz if that is where mid band is setup now? |

OK, I have tried all different drive inputs from 1/2 watt to 4 watts and I still get, "Sounds Fuzzy" reports and it does sound fuzzy when monitoring with headphones on my Dosy meter. This amp keys at 300 with one watt input and swings over 1K on a Dosy meter. The drive tube which was a 6LX6 turned cherry and was changed to a 6LF6 still fuzzy but that tube got cherry. I then put in a good 6LB6 and that tube does not get cherry. But is still fuzzy. The finals which are 8908's are all good. I do have five extra NEW 8908 tubes. I'm driving it with a Cobra 148GTL now. It doesn't matter which radio I use and I have several. Still a little fuzzy!!! I never had an amp that sounded this fuzzy even with low drive. Now what? |

Waukeshajim, Darn I'm not a expert but it's starting to sound like a Voltage problem like you would get on a moble with low voltage. Sounds like the amp keying wise is fine. Have you tried different lenghts of jumpers between your radio and amp. I've always heard different lengths do different things from good to worse. |

I found a NEW driver tube and changed the variable capacitor for the tune for max adjustment on the back and now it works great. The old variable capacitor must not have been working right. Now it sounds great. Dead key is 250 and swings 700 watts RMS, 1200 PEP. Keys and unkeys like it is suppose to and runs cool.
Now I just need my Tram question answered.

I have one with five 35LR6 tubes. They were in it when i got the amp, and I really don't know what tubes are supposed to be in it. It "sounds fuzzy" too, and i've had issues with that variable cap. What are the specs on it? I haven't messed with the amp in at least 3 years. |

I don't know the specs as I can not find the correct info except on the internet which I think is not exactly the same amp. I had an old Pal 321 which is the same as a Palomar. I took the variable cap out and put it in the Galaxy. I saw a Galaxy 300 on an auction site which had showed the cap wired different than my 1000 so I installed the one from the Palomar like it was in the Pal. I put in a new drive tube 6LB6 instead of the 6LX6. I works pretty good. Audio had cleaned up soom. Some radio checks state audio is clear now. What was happening was with the old cap, the driver tube would cherry real hot and blow the fuse. Now after changing the variable cap, cleaning up all the solder joints and using a new 6LB6 for a driver, it seems to work well and stays cool. Seems like all these Galaxy tube amps are very old and some have been changed to different tubes. Here's a picture of the driver section! Good luck.

if u are useing a c0bra 2000 like me,its not clear ever through the head phone jack.mine is slightly fuzzy but the audio coming out of the antenna is clear. |

After changing the variable cap for the "tune for Max" on the back and using a 6LB6 tube for a driver instead of the 6LX6 tube, the audio cleared up real nice. But like you said, sounds a little fuzzy in headphones on the Dosy meter but is clear on the airwaves. I'm using several radios, Galaxy DX959, Galaxy 2527, Cobra 148GTL and the my all time favorite, my Tram D201A and currently running a Imax 2000 but will soon be putting up a Maco V5000. I'd like to try the General Stonewall Jackson but I'm sure it would just over drive the 1000 with swing and destroy the vintage 8908 tubes. Nice amp, just wish it was filtered a little better.
