The 500 SSB was a great radio.I used to have one myself.Converted it to ten meter with just PLL programing and realigning.Wish I could find another unbutchered one.I would not hesitate to do the swap myself.

palomar 500 for a grant xl would be a hard trade to make, ESPECIALLY if the xl is in good shape & works good. if i remember, the palomar was built on an mc145106-designed chassis & was pretty much a copy of the original cobra 148 gtl dx/superstar 360 fm and similar to a president jackson export. unless out of band operation where a grant xl CAN'T go-mainly below 26.815-is important, the xl should have a superior receiver and, its xmit should be MUCH cleaner. i had 2 different palomar SSB radios, possibly a 500 & 5000(which was inferior to the other palomar i had), both were bypassed in favor of a president grant export AND USA version, which i felt were better all around radios. as a novelty piece, if in good condition, the palomar 500 MAY be worth an xl + some cash. maybe. i'd still prefer the xl.
