a friend of mine brought me a 148 gtl phillipene model made in 1990. the modulation on this is very low. it has had variable key already in it. wired into vr 10. also it has had a mod kit with another variable key in it??? when i got it i can set the variable at 1/2 watt and it will swing 3. or i can set it at 3 and it will stay still no swing. so i tried to peak and tune, maybe got another 1/2 watt swing. anyway i unhooked the mod kit and hooked it back up without it and no change. turned r7 with no luck so, i put it back. i clipped 131 with no change, so i put it back. this has not had the r 194 changed with the 4001 diode. do you think this will help? or does it have more troubles? modulation transformer or audio chip weak?

thought i would add a little more. the key watts will only key about 3 watts max. everything else seems to work fine. rx and ssb ok. just about 5 watts swing on ssb. should be way stronger.

IMHO,I would say that it needs more than a diode for resistor change. It could have a weak final.

Possible audio tranny fault and maybe worth checking the voltage regulator chip too .

thanks very much for your insight. i was thinking maybe a final is weak. i looking thru my parts to see if i have an extra one. but before i do that. where is the audio tranny located? and the voltage regulator chip and what voltages should i expect? thanks for your help.
