gotta have both ....while the classic 'browning ping' is 'neat' on AM, i found the mkIII/IV/IVa to be better SSB radios, & the d201/201a a better AM radio. SSB audio may be a bit 'cleaner' on the browning & AM audio more 'punchy' on the tram. SSB receive is 'different' on the tram, & again a bit 'cleaner' on the browning. no heavy 'tweaks' done to xmit, and i'd say they're neck & neck either mode. rcv, i still lean towards browning, especially SSB. i've HAD both, currently have neither, but am dying to find a 201 owned by a little ole lady who only used it to come across the church PA system on sundays during high sunspot cycles.... |

i have a collection of all the Tram radios & Brownings and find that in the Browning Golden Eagle line i like the Golden Eagle the first of the Golden Eagle series better audio and much much better receive then the others better filtering. followed by the Mark III. either of these can be made to expand above channel 23 with a VFO slider. In the Tram series with the D201's i like the D201 better especially if it's the hard wired radio with out the circuit boards less likely to experiance problems with the trouble sum BA board due to heat from a near by tube. also the D201 as well as the D201A have crystal and manual tuning where with the crystal side if it's a D201 you can tune ch. 1 thru 23 but go to the manual side tune ch.1 thru 55 with simple mod. the D201A has the same thing tuning via crystal side 1 thru 40 and manual side 1 thru 55. also watch the D201 A's some had a channel channel selecter issue with the crystal side it would have a black square base on the back of the channel selector that will fail for sure and be a costly repair. but the D201's don't have that problem also i find the Trams to be much better radios on SSB and use my D201 to do a lot of free band DXing.on SSB. oh also if you do find a D201A look to see if it has the updated gray base channel selector less prone to failure. but if you do settle on a D201A you can always use the manual tuning side and not the crystal so you won't have that part fail. but i find the D201 to be an over all better radio on RX & TX. |
