skip is nothing but luck.ya could talk skip with what ya got.then other times seems ya need 500 plus to do it.but id start at 100 watts with a good antenna.reason being ya start to add large amounts of power then ya start needing bigger altenators better batterires then ya gotta worry about messing with the computer in the vehicle.what 10k ya got? dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64

I work skip (on 10m) with 5w or less and an A-99 mounted at 4ft above ground level.. So far over 80 countries and 49 states worked (just can't get Idaho).. Skip/DX is as Dale said a matter of luck - being on the right frequency at the right time, and that is why my 10m radio runs 24/7 in scan mode. 11m is pretty much the same, although it stays mainly on Ch 13.. As you know, working skip, or DX, is really up to nature. Running 1500 watts with no conditions will only cause all that RF to shoot out into space. When the band is open, you certainly could have success with a good mobile antenna and 250-300 watts, to help compensate for the losses of a mobile install. Beyond that, I think you start to get into diminishing returns. I ran that type of setup in a pickup truck for many years and made contacts all over North and South America, as well as Europe...but of course, the band was open. But for the next few years, there probably won't be much in the way of real skip. These days, I can work DX from my mobile on the HF ham bands, using my Yaesu FT-857 (100w max) and my Yaesu ATAS-120 screwdriver antenna, because there are other bands that are open all the time, even though 11 meters is quiet. i've been heard S9+ or better to CEF491 & 808 & others with 2 watts carrier/15 PEP on a grant XL through my predator 10K, so as dale & 237 said, 'right place, right time' is a big part of it. that said, 250 watts PEP, from say a dx350 texas star would be nice with that little galaxy & get you some decent SSB contacts. 1 step up to a dx500 or even 667 will get you in the 500 PEP range & SSB contacts will be fairly easy, AM contacts will happen frequently as well. depending on your vehicle, the dx350 should give no problems, the 500/667 will be borderline. on the bright side, except for these past several days, DX has been nearly non-existant, so you'll have til next may to think things out, decide what you want & set it up properly. |

We have had as many CEF Radio Club Members make contact with other CEF Radio Club Member's with 100% stock radios swinging 10 to 15 watts as those using MORE power. The MOST important thing you will need for talking SKIP is a GOOD ANTENNA! Lon ~ Tech808 ~ N9CEF CEF#808 ~ CEF HAM#33 ~ CVC#002 Tech808@copperelectronics.com

Yes i put out maybe 12 watts on our 11 meter nets and make contacts all around when conditions permits. Its all about antenna a good ground , Also when skip is in the air. Conditions well thats what helps a whole bunch Not watts . I can QRP 10 watts and talk around the world. Rich, Yes! Patzerozero made the DX trip from Long Island, NewYork to Indianapolis,Indiana with a 2 watt carrier no problem getting a few s-units! Now when he turned the Dave back on it was a difference between night and day, like he was sitting beside me. Back then the DX propagation between the midwest and New England was amazing and like everyday. There is so much competition out there it takes a lot of patience to make a barefoot contact in a mobile working the cb portion of 11 meters. Base stations have much better luck barefoot. My honest opinion.....if you want a really good skip talking mobile get your Predator up as high as possible, most of the signal radiates from below the Predators coil. Mount it well and use a premium coax, I like RG213. A well tuned standard cb will work but a nice export like a Magnum or Connex will work BETTER! A well built 4x2879 pill amplifier, wire and ground it all directly to the battery, be sure you have enough amperage in your charging system and last but not least be sure the antenna SWR is nice and LOW! You'll be able to get your name called just about whenever you want. To get your name called on channel 6 takes a little more investment. KEEP IT REAL!
