I've been doing a lot of research here on the board and have found some conflicting advice and figures on how to drive a sixteen. I have a 1st generation S-9 that I love. I would like to make as much use of the radios power and top-gun modulator as possible. I also have a DX1600 that needs to be properly driven and again I want to make full use of the power. I'm thinking of a DX350HDV or DX500V. I would prefer variable power as to "dial in" the driving amp for the most power and cleanest sound. I talk am and sideband only. Will the 2 pill DX350 handle the swing of the S-9's 45w top-gun? Any suggesstions would be appreciated. |

I would think if you take it easy it can work however you may have a high dead key. What I want to know is how much alternator do you need to run the 16 at full tilt and what kind of numbers would you see? |

Yes, I'm aware from several sources that the DX500 is a perfect match to the S-9, but wouldn't the 500 be overkill to a DX1600? I'm sure I would need the variable model to tune down the 500 going into the 1600. It would be four 2879's driving eight 2879's, besides can I even vary the 500 down far enough to not overdrive the 1600? |

Texas Star recommends the DX350 to drive the 1600. I'm asking for advice on which one to go with for radio I have and to drive the 1600. Has anyone not been down this road before with this combo??? |

yea the 500v is kinda overkill for the 1600. but with the 350v you would have to keep the top gun off and mic gain down to were the radio only pep/swings to around 12-15 watts.in your first post ya xasked if the ts 350v would handle the s9 with full swing and topgun on and the answer is no.however if ya cut everything down it may work.the s9,and 500v alone is a hot setup.id love to have that setup dale/a.k.a.hotrod cef426 cvc#64

Thanks guys.........808 I have read that bulletin several times. The question is really which is the lesser of two evils. I'm gonna have to call California myself and see just how far a 500v can be dialed down into the 1600. Thanks again guys. |

chris....you got a reply.... flush, years ago i ran a chevy blazer with 3-4 batteries & a custom made, $50, 105 amp, 1 wire chevy alternator, with an ar3500 & dx1600. i saw 400+ dead key & 1200 PEP....albeit with lots of engine revs. ran much better with a 165 amp alternator though! a 200 amp alt showed absolutely NO VOLTAGE drop at cruising speed. 80 amps at idle & drop was minimal. if you're using an alternator with a lower rating then the amp draws & extra batteries, DEFINITELY go overkill on charge wire & cables to amp! was recently a car fire here probably due to draw of 200 amps across #6 cable..... |

My S9 goes into a Silverstreak 250, into the DX1600. This is a 2x22990 into 8x2879 setup. Topgun off, play with the variable power and mic gain on the radio until you have everything dialed in. On my PalStar WM2000M I see 1600 watts with the driver on the low setting and about 1800 with the driver on high. I don't turn the 1600 on much, as I can usually talk to whoever I'm talking to with the radio alone, or maybe with the small amp turned on. But when I do, I can really reach out and talk!!! Just make sure to have a power supply system that can handle the load. There is good info here to help. "In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them".

Capt, I am driving the 1600 with a DaveMade 2 pill 2290 M80 now and I'm not happy with it. Class C is for the birds and I like side bands too much to live with this driver. Power is ok at 100 d.k. from the 1600 swinging 1000-1100. |

Badbusa13, I was told that the Silver Streak 250 I am using, was an AB1 when I got it. My setup is used primarily on ssb, and I have recieved many compliments. I have 2 1100cca batteries, a 200a alternator, and 2ga battery cable from the batteries, through a 150a circut breaker, to the 1600, and 4ga, through a 50a breaker, to the 250. "In God we trust. The 50 watt Magnum S-9 will drive the DX 1600 but not to its full output, you will only see half the numbers you want. The DX1600 needs 100 or so watts of PEP drive. Not much over 100 watts, 120 watts maybe....max tops! Its a difficult match up. No 100 watt driver box out there that is made for an S-9 that I am aware of. Get the 100-150 watt S-9 and be done with it. KEEP IT REAL! Kenny cef491(27.115lsb) 2sf491(27.555usb) Indiana
