B_d,
do a web search for"alternator secrets".the right webpage will give you diagrams and hints on using car alternators in different ways.might also show where your problem lies.

Not shure what or how you wired the alternator?
When you fire up the gas engine there should be no switch between the alternator and the gas engine.

If you put a shutoff switch on the hot side (output)--- the drive 12 volt out, you can shut down the power to what ever you have connected (12 vote radio or any 12 vote applacation).

I also would suggest to filter the the hot side of alternator to keep noise down if your going to run a radio.

Think of just like a car or truck setup, You should have 12volt battery in line also--(If you run out of gas you will have power to run till you drain the battery down- depends on current comsumtion.)

I have built mine from a old push mower and it mounted on the deck it works just great! Also a battery inline also!

Hope this helps

Ok when you start the gas engine up the alternator is allready putting power out! When you are turning the pulley of the alternator you should have 12 to 18 volts out. And it is regulated at any speed! Now i have question why do you have switch to energize the alternator???? There should be no switch .... inline what so ever!!! When the gas engine is up and running with the alternator going to produce power out.(As far is no diode burntout on the alternator).My sugestion is to take the switch out and try it. Just thought of something if you put a load on the alternator it might have bad bearings and kill the motor.

Trying to help you !
let me know?
