My 2 yr old voyage vr9000 died today. No problems till now. Had to get my crapy ol galaxy saturn out today to talk on. When it rains the smelly stuff it pours. Heres what its doing, it keys up and a full key with no modulation. It will key full radio power 40 watts and without being to modulate. Finals, regulator, I have no idea. Anyones help like a tech found on here. would be nice. I am pleaged with out getting questions answered though. I will try again though. But anyway, thats it. I changed nothing did nothing different. Talked on it the day it died as usuall, turned it of, next morning, I turned it on and poooof, hard heavy key and no modulation. I do not know. I am apaud on this 1. Any way, any info would be nice. Oh and we had no other conditions that were different, same weather and all, no lightning or anything. What would make a radio key full radio power 40 watts and wont modulate. Im thinking the heavy key is takin out the modulation, but im no tech and simply dont know. Richey DX freak/Mad Dog/Puppet Master CEF#885 I can only do the best I can with what I got.

Well as you might already know.... the higher your output carrier is to the max output of the radio, the less modulation your going to have. You MAY not have lost your modulation but rather something caused your variable power to go into full output thereby seeming like you have no audio......you just ran out of headroom for modulation. Work on getting the carrier (deadkey) down then test for modulation. Find the correct VR for that model maybe using the TOOLS/Modifications sidebar to the left and turn it down...IF it will turn down. I'm not familiar with that particular model but I'd try the above then go from there. Stupid question time. Has anyone you know been on the RX end of your transmissions? Are they telling you "no modulation"...or "low modulation". HAS ANYONE been there to tell you that your not squealing making it look to you that you carrier is that high when your really just modulating a squeeeeeeeeel? Any of this helps then great...if not then it sounds like a final tranny is in some sort of self oscillation (does your RX seem weak?... Is the radio staying keyed in TX?) and needs to be tested or replaced. If you don't have the tools or experience you'll have to find someone you trust. Best of luck and I'd like to know what you find. Hope some of this helps Hank~CEF559/CEFHAM242 KC2RIW Eastern Long Island NY

Sounds to me like it is possible your AM modulation amp tranny has gone snaffoo and is givin the full 13.8 volts goin onto it to the finals this would give the full power output of the finals you are seeing , just another possibility . JIM Road Warrior134 CEF#858 HAM#230 CVC#116

I hooked the thing to my dummy load and had another radio on, as for the audio, there is nothing coming out of audio like squeel or anything, and as for the modulation getting overcome by the key, that is what i believe is exactly going on. The radio is keying full radio output and whit no help for the rf power. Turning it does nothing. It stays at full out put power. I did go in and pull the regulator and put in one I knew was good and same thing. Im thinking the circuit in the key up that controls the power after the regulator has had something happen to it. Resistor, diod something in that nature. I will more then likly take it to the doc this week but if anyone has more clues, Id give them a try. Thanks to all so far. Dx_freak im glad you asked this question, I may have a fix for you, try to replace the voltage regulator amp at tr50 which is a A1869 and replace it with a 2SA473 it is just in front of the am modulator amp at tr51 which is a 2SB754 replace that with a scb817 also for more stability for entire radio. This will fix the problem. It can be caused by reversing the polarity on hook up or an extra amount of static electricity caused by lightning. OH I am dx_freak, Well goes to show all else fails fix it your self. If you experience with a full power dead key with no modulation as I did, Replace tr50 with same part or as I did a 2SA473 and your problem will be fixed also as above while your there replace tr51 with a 2SB817. It will fix your problem. Thank you for your help Dx_freak. I do not claim to be a radio tech by far but I will post all my findings im am a up and coming professional radio repiar technician. Ya right, LOL. Thank you for all the help from the pro's out there. Richey DX freak/Mad Dog/Puppet Master CEF#885 I can only do the best I can with what I got.

Here is a little more info on the above problem I had with my voyage vr9000, which is the same ETP360014B board in all the 10 meter radio's, galaxy, connex, ranger all of them that have the 3600 board. If you experience the full power dead key when you key the mic and have no modulation, the problem will be the tr50 voltage regulator amp, I also found out by trying and being successfull, you can use a ECG153 or any compatable cross there of that part or the 2SA473. I tested this by coming across a bunch of old electronics repairmans new in the box or bag items. I check the numbers on a lot of these bags and found that the ECG152 will also work, and in the tr50 and the tr41 spots. I installed the ECG153 in my voyage and wala, it works perfect. A $45 savings by doing it myself and no $$$ for the new part. Now I need another radio to fill the slot on the shelf. I am also aware that the 2SA1012 should fix the problem also. If you have the full power key no modulation, well tr50 is your patsy. Richey DX freak/Mad Dog/Puppet Master CEF#885 I can only do the best I can with what I got.

VR 9000 When I turn the radio on a noise level slowly rises and stays at S-9 , also the Squelch acts as a secondary volume and the volume acts as the primary volume. Very strange.

What is the most I could get out of a 959 Mobil radio. I've bought a new 30013 reio and I dont want to run a box in it because I've heard that it will mess the computer components on the car tore up. I realize that in order to turn up the wattage you'll have to turn up the key up up also, which is ok with me. I've also heard about something called Moffat's finals . Now I dont know what theres are or how they will work could some one please explain these to me. I'm running a voyage vr9000 that does around 30 to 32 watts but I like my 959 better so any help would be highly appreciated thank you so much |
