Just getting ready to get back into radios after a brief necessary time out. Anyway I'm looking for a new mobile antenna. I'm looking at the Jo Gunn Wizard and the Signal Engineering Spyder 50. Anyone have any experience with these or any other suggestions? Mounting is not a problem cause I'll drill a hole anywhere to get it mounted. Bullseye/CEF#110/Mem. Since 1/18/2002

Go with the longest mobile antenna you can physically manage on your vehicle. The longer they are , the more efficient they are. I like the Antron 1700 it's about 6 foot long and only about $18. OR try a 7 foot tall firestik. Copper also offered a similar 7 foot antenna for CHEEP. Moderator Note! CLICK HERE > Anttron A-1700 |

Will the Anttron really take 2000 watts? Don't plan to run more than 300 or 400 at the very top of my power dream but you never know. Bullseye/CEF#110/Mem. Since 1/18/2002

if you want (need) an antenna in the 60" range, i'd prefer a 'skipshooter' over either the 'gunn or the SE. i won't get into '8 foot whip vs shortened antenna' war here, but, have found that just about ANY large open air coil DX-type antenna outperforms most other shortened antennas, such as wilson, k40, etc. the difference is even more biased towards the DX-type antenna when a mag mount is used-especially with 'real' coax on the 'big' antenna. |

After reading many articles on antenna theory and what people have the most luck with I don't think there is a best mobile antenna. "T-bone" CH 34 Atlantic City

Fordpsd and Copper Forum Member's, Right now I have been testing both the Wilson 1000 and Wilson 5000 antennas against 2 Mobile Antennas using Mag Mounts and so far BOTH of the Mobile Antennas have out performed both the Wilson 1000 and Wilson 5000 in side by side actual on air testing. Testing is being performed in side by side (all 4 antennas on roof) at: 5/10/15/20/25/and 30 miles back to base stations. Tech 808 I wish you'd test an Everhardt tiger SOTT5 or 4 tuneables against them. I think it was on this site that someone thought the Tiger was the best he ever used. The Predator 10K can out perform the Wilson 5000 but only if it is mounted on the roof where my 5000 is. Putting the Predator 10K on the roof for me isn't an option. Putting the 10K on the bedrail of my pickup won't give the performance of the 10K. "T-bone" CH 34 Atlantic City

The Wilson 5000 with a Galaxy 93t had very low SWR. 1.1 with the dead keys set at 2 watts, 8 watts and 12 watts. When I raised the DK to 5, 12 and 25 the SWR shot up to 2.5 and 3.0. I had to cut off about 2" of the whip to bring it down to about 1.3. This stuff is all new to me but I'm learning. "T-bone" CH 34 Atlantic City
