Lightning strike. Blowed it right off the tower. I don't think I will go back fiber glass. It ran in the house & got 3 surge protectors. Knock out my electic fence unit. Everything is replaced except I need a metal omni antenna.

wow!
glad everyone is OK.
was the antenna connected to the radio at the time?
how did the radio equip. fare?

you might think about getting a polyphaser with the new antenna.

KV- If it 'ran in the house' as described, then he clearly did not have a Polyphaser.

Polyphasor or not, there's still an EMP to deal with. I lost a bunch of stuff from ma-nauter taking it's vengance out on a tree. I did not have polyphasers, but, I digress...... I did not have a single antenna to attach it to either :-)

The EMP can be dealt with also. Check out the Polyphaser website.

I always had good luck with their phone line and network protectors too, in fact that's how I learned of polyphaser, we were getting nic cards and phones knocked around at an alarming rate.

Nothing like dialing up the transmitter 30 miles away when you are off-line to find out the phone interface was nuked!

That had the tendency to make a grown man have a temper tantrum :-) I DON't WANNA GOOOOOOOO!! It's COOLLLLLDDDDD OUT! Oh wait, you live in CA :-) It's RRAAAIINNNY and MMUUDDDYYYY out, Is that better?

Did it look like those fiber optic lamps from the 70s? I saw one locally that was hit by lightning and it looked just like one. The owner kept it for a while just to show people.

im going to bite the bullet and get one myself.
seeing as how my antenna is now the tallest thing in the whole neighborhood. (the top one is now at 54' to the tip).

The radio was not connected. We had to go out of town for a few days and I disconnected the coax. What is a polyphasor and where does a person get one?

Was thinking of trying a Wolfpoint .64 antenna.
Wonder how efficent the gamma match is on a omni?

Thanks for the post. Well I might go with the I10K. I never was much on the Maco v58. I rather have a A99 with a gpk and so I did. Just don't want to go back fiber glass this time. I will probably wait till spring. In the mean time I going to put my 2 meter antenna up top of the tower to see how it works there.

danusee, i just spoke to eddie, & he told me as duck246 said-no more CB antennas, just broadcast. he ALSO told me that HIS antenna, as well as the v5/8, i*** & mr ***** all perform EXACTLY the same!!! he would not have recommended a working v5/8 to be replaced by any INCLUDING his own, as you would NOT notice any difference! when i told him about my re-shaped 20 year old v5/8 & that i was thinking about replacing it in the spring, he suggested, since he no longer makes the wolfpoint .64, that if i had $295-450 laying around, i should get a custom-made antenna. if i wanted to save some bucks for food, i should spend $10-20 & buy some new hardware, a good quality so-239 & a piece of wire & replace them on my maco. metal is metal, so tvi, static, etc should NOT be any different on my maco vs ANY other aluminum 5/8 (or.64) antenna, & as for performance-height, ground plane size & angle, obstructions, coax quality, ground quality, radio performance, etc are the ONLY things that could show 1 antenna performing better then another when they show the same exact readings on an antenna analyzer. he DID explain, that, YES, 1 could outperform another, even drastically, when SWR, shown on a meter, on both is 1.1:1, based on different reactance & resistance readings. owning & knowing how to use an analyzer are 2 different things.

so what am I going to do in the spring??? spend the $20, take my mfj259 outside & see what it says my rebuilt maco v5/8 is doing.
