i have been researching a while now on a new vertical antenna, and it seems that this design stands out above the rest when it comes to gain and performance.
its design is called a 7/8 wave coaxial J pole.
this thing is 27' tall!
so what are the opinions and experiences with this antenna?
any and all feedback is welcome.
im pretty much decided that im staying in the house im in for at least another year, and this is the reason for the upgrade.
plus, i just want a new toy to play with, and antennas are FUN!

I've owned that antenna.
To much antenna swinging, snapped on me.
Anything over a .64 wave starts to decrease
in performance anyhow. |

thanks for the response road warrior!
did you have the hoop secured the vertical radiator so that only the top 20' could move?
im wondering if this is the reason so many of these things bent. (lots of similar stories on the net)
from what i have gathered so far, it is a 7/8 wave antenna that radiates like a 5/8 wave antenna because of its design.
dont know if thats true or not.
a few of the guys that swear by this design are people that REALLY seem to know their stuff.
i wonder if tech833 has ever messed with one of these?

Don't believe what a lot of manufacturers post about gain figures on their antennas. Probably the best vertical antenna ever made for simplicity of design and performance has been the antron 99 or equivalent. Over the years I have used a lot of antennas and this one really shines. I have worked the world on this antenna. You can't go wrong with this one or the IMAX. |

No Kid, i assembled antenna and used nothing
else to support it. Winter time winds
snapped off part of the long whip and
hoop elements split from the cold. |

The 7/8 wave replaced a old A-99 that
i had up. 7/8 wave was stronger local.
DX talking- hard to tell as Dx always changes.
The 7/8 wave is just really long Kid.
Probably doesn't do any better than a
20-22 ft antenna. I suppose it could be
supported from swaying to much. I think water
some how got into the hoop as they split
on me. Our winters here lately have been more
mild than those of years ago. I had a few
antennas go belly up on me. Winters back then
were really icy, windy, and temps of
16-22 degrees below zero for weeks. |

thanks for the info RW,
im usually not too worried about the cheap build quality of these knock off antennas, as i have been in the habit of upgrading the hardware and supports for a while now.
being a metal fabricator has its advantages, and i can usually tell when metal is not strong enough to hold.
im sure you have learned the same things in your extensive antenna experience. (i dont know too many people that have owned as many as you LOL)
bobby, check out the article on this forum called"
antron99 exposed" to find out what this antenna is all about.
i, just like most CB'ers, have one, but dont use it much anymore, because there are better antenna deisgns out there.
the A99 was a good antenna.
the IMAX is a good antenna.
i have found that due to factors such as skin effect, that aluminum antennas are superior to fiberglass antennas.
this is just opinion, but i have been messing with this stuff for quite a while.
i too worked the world on my A99. and loved it very much.
