A friend of mine and fellow Copper/CEF member has discovered the exciting world of radio and is really starting to take an interest in 11 meter. He has a little Cobra in the truck that got his feet wet but now he is wanting to upgrade. Wants a President Lincoln. (this guy did his homework) The antenna part is getting a little confusing to him. As an owner of the Predator10K this is the antenna I recommended to him. Of course everyone is different and I can respect that. He seems to like the looks of the Monkey Made better with its flat coils and that lifetime guarantee does'nt sound bad at all. Now he is going to install his antenna behind the cab of his pickup in the center as high as possible or on the side of the bed in the middle stakehole. He is learning the importance of the antenna placement for best groundplane. The question: Can I get some Monkey Made owners and Predator owners to give their opinions on performance and craftsmanship of the 2? Have you tried both? What were the differences if any? Does it matter that the Monkmade has a much shorter shaft than the longer Predators? Please guys help us out. Any info is welcome! thanks Kenny CEF491 |

I honestly believe that nobody on the other end will ever be able to tell the difference and likewise as far as the owners "ears". I'd tend to think the skin effect (capture?) may be better on the flat wound surface area but by how much? You may already know I'm a 10K owner and other than tearing up trees do to an overall hight of around 14 FEET!!! it'll likely be the last antenna I ever buy. I chose the 10K for its aluminum construction and light weight over the monkey. One other thing to think about is the extra windload placed on that flat wound coil. Cale of 10K is also the best you can get in customer service with emails answered usually the same day! |

i've noticed little, if any XMIT or RCV differences in ANY large open-air coil DX-type antenna i've ever tried, even no-name cheapies. as long as the swr's adjust to near 1:1, they are ALL pretty much the same. BANDWIDTH seems to differ on many though, i've seen srw's stay under 1.5:1 on as few as 40 channels & more then 1 mHz. construction, & ease of repair is also another factor. monkey & predator meet all expectations. as hank says, windload & possible obstructions that may need to be negotiated come into play. in theory, the longer the antenna is, the better. my 86" predator DOES show a difference, as minimal as it may be, vs a 56" version made by solarcon....nighthawk it may have been called. when any of these things are on your roof, you cannot travel incognito, but i STILL prefer my predator to ANY other i've ever used |

Thanks fellas, I feel the same love for the Pred as the 3 of you. Good point about not being able to tell the difference on air. Of course longer is better. I'm thinking that the longer Predator would out perform the shorter Monkey in the long distance test. Another important thing to consider that you mentioned Pat is the bandwidth! My swr with the Pred is fine wherever I wish to use it on the 11 meter band. Actually I'm safe in the whole 12 meter band and 11 meter and just starts getting a little high once I hit 10 meters. Never had that much space before without retuning. My friend is leaning towards the Pred I think. Just last night he was witness to some good S. American DX! |

I had the pleasure of testing a monkey-made and 10K antennas for a day. I liked the 10k antenna best also. |
