I have searched this forum high and low. And haven't found the answer. My question is can I use a trunk mount on a Workman SP-3000 Coiled Antenna. Can this mount handle it. Most that see say 3 to 4 ft. Does this mean the total length or what. I know most people drill holes and would mount on center of pickup but don't want to do any drilling cab maybe the bed in do time. I wanted something quick I could setup for now. Thanx DoughboyX

what you want is a stake-hole mount.

it mounts right inside of one of the stake holes in the bed of your pickup. no drilling required.

just do a google search on "stake hole mount" to see some pictures of how it works.
should be perfect in your setup.
not sure how you were going to use a trunk mount on a pickup.

I have seen several trucks around with trunk mounts on their hoods, in front of the vehicles. That is why I was asking this question. I can find a trunk mount easier than a stake hole mount locally. And plus my truck bed has a liner that covers up those holes you are talking about. Which make it more complicated to do any drilling into the bed at this time. I wanted something quick and easy to set-up for now. Thanx DoughboyX

I use a stake hole mount on my Dakota and it's great. You may have to do a little shimming to get it to stand perfectly straight up but solid copper wire works well for this procedure. My mount is in the rear corner hole. It DOES make it look like a R/C car but I have no holes and it gets out :-)

Chad , Kid_vicious

Looked on the bed of my truck, I don't have any holes for a stake hole mount. I was looking for an easy solution to set-up my mobile stuff, maybe this weekend. I have a 97 S-10 Chevy. Still need this question anwsered will the Workman SP-3000 Coiled Antenna have any problem being used on a trunk mount. I will be using it as a hood mount. In front of the truck. Thanx DoughboyX

Doughboyx,

Most all trunk mounts were not designed to handle such a large antenna/windload.

You would need to use a HEAVY DUTY STUD MOUNT like mentioned above and below and it would need to be mounted VERY SECURLEY.

CLICK BELOW!
Super Heavy Duty Stud Mount

I would not personally recommend using a trunk mount on the front of any vehicle.

Corncob / CEF#166 made an L bracket with the HEAVY DUTY STUD MOUNT that is dead center of his truck bed and mounted to the bed and sticks up about 2".

This allows him FULL use of the bed and also keeps his antenna dead center for maximum performance and also cuts down on the Wind Load factor with the cab blocking most of the wind.

Hope this help's,

Lon,

I guess I will figure something out. It looks like I will have to make me a homemade bracket myself somehow. Just thought there would something on the market that would do the job.

go on 'auction'. go to 'ham radio' & enter 'icom', there is a trailer hitch mount that could be adapted, or built to your needs(it expires in 14 hours-HURRY!) www.w9iix.com also has one you could buy or build to your needs!

yep, no holes on the S10 pickups. bummer huh!

i have to agree with lon about using a trunk mount.
it may seem like the easiest way to do this now, but if it doesnt hold; you're trucks gonna be scratched, and the hood possibly bent.
those trunk mounts only have two very small set screws holding them in place.
remember that if you do use one of those trunk mounts, that you have to scrape off the paint where the two set screws touch to have a good ground, and you have to bond the hood to the frame of the vehicle using a ground strap.

im thinking that a magnet mount is looking pretty good for your setup.
good luck,
matt

I have seen many antenna installs with the antenna mounted on the edge of the hood or on the front fender. Anyone do it like this? I always thought it would increase the chances for interference with the antenna being so close to the engine and other componets of the vehicle like the alternator wipers air condition to name a few.

I use a magnet mount with 3 5 inch magnets, although you do not want to try to move it when you set it. It will hold any antenna you want to put on it. Right now I have a Preditor 10K on it that is right at 6 foot tall.

I use the 102" whip on a 96 Bronco on a hood/trunk mount and have never had a problem.
Antenna is about 2' in front of the windshield on the drivers side. SWR is 1.1 to 1 hood/trunk mount actually bolts right through the lip of the fender and the wheel well. will post a picture in members pictures

I have found a solution made my own corner mount.
Used a 3" Heavy Duty Corner Brace from Lowes drilled a 1/2" hole mid center of it. Then I cut into the bedliner and mounted everything from a mirror mount I had. So far so good everything is working, used for two days now at speeds of about 80 to 90 mph on the interstate just to make sure it would hold up. Oh yeah it is on a spring so it leans alittle.

So thanks for the ideas anyway. DoughboyX

Oh yeah have pics too but inside truck isn't done yet just have cables and wires on the floor. I need to find a good hump mount or will try to build me something if I can't find it locally.
