I just picked up a Palomar 450 Elite High Drive and thought I might use it for mobile use. What deadkey should I put into it and what power (pep) should I realistically expect out of it. Murray |

If the amp has 4 sd1446 pills, I'd key into it 2 1/2 to 3 watts drive, or whatever it takes to get the amp to dead key 100 to 105 watts on the high setting. Amp will probably do 350 to 380 watts peak. Wolverine. |

Oldpirate, Wolverine is CORRECT! I wish these Amp Builders / Maunfacturers would STOP Putting the letters HD in the name or Advertising them as High Drive Amplifiers as 99% of them they are NOT a High Drive Amplifier. The Dealers and Distributors are in a catch 22 as they then have to advertise them as the Manufacturer has them named/labeled. A lot of people think because an Amp has a HD in the name or says High Drive you can put more power/drive into them and then on the 1st key up the Amp goes POOF! Sorry just had to get that off my chest it has been bugging me for years. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN

Darryl and Lon, Thanks for the advice, will keep the dead key low. I had heard rumours that HD on these amps was a bit misleading so will just treat it as a low drive amp. Murray |

Oldpirate, I also have a Palomar 450 HD amp. Very dependable for a mass produced consumer (not a fan cooled competiton amp)amplifier. Take care of it, and will take care of you. As tech 808 said, the designation HD, is a bunch of "Huey". You're welcome, for the advice. Tech 808, thanks for the validation. Wolverine. |

I know this is an old thread, but how many amps does the Pal 450HD need to use 100% effectively? I run a straight Pal 450 and use a Pyramid 35 amp power supply, but my output doesn't go any higher than 250 watts on my meter. Occasionally the power supply red light will go on signaling more amp pull than available. If I had a better power supply (40-45+ amp?) would that get me to the advertised 400-450 watts? |

Digger, Amps will only do about 2/3rds of said wattage safetly without going up in smoke!! To push a amp at advertized rating is keeping the techs. busy. |

If your power supply is warning you of overload then you need to go bigger. At least 45 amps, more if you can. Kenny CEF491 Reading the mail around Indianapolis Indiana!

So 2/3rds is about 300 watts, so I'm close. But I need to address the warning light on the power supply. Guess I need to trade up to the bigger 45 amp Pyramid. |
