I appreciate the help I have been looking at KL amps and here they are the best cheap amps on the market. Would like something to accept a little more input though. Thanks |

can't recommend an amp without knowing- do you plan on AM or SSB or both? what type of radio & what has been done? dead key? is it variable? swing? what kind of REAL watts are you expecting to get out of this amp or what do you plan to use it for-just a bit more punch or LONG distance work? |

That 300P will do it's thing on both am and ssb. It's the Magnum 257 of cheaper priced amplifiers. I highly recommend it. mikefromms |

Just wanted to mention another good one from Palomar, it's the Elite 300, has a very good receive preamp that doesn't pick up all the ground noise has 1446X2 transistors and if it is going to be used at a base installation, it's best to have a good regulated power supply of at least 20 amps. Depending on where you would be getting your information, the 1446 transistor is rated at 90 watts sideband at 27 MHz. A pair of 1446 transistors will output around 130 watts AM and around 150-170 watts sideband depending on the final drive output of the driving radio. Remembering to set the AM dead key on the radio at around 2 watts. |

Sthrnredneck: Of the KL series Amps, the kl-400 and 500 will handle that radio. Although it would be better if you could turn it down. http://www.rmitaly.com/scheda.asp?IDGr=1&cat=0&tipo=96 Form experience, I would run the 400 at power level #2 or #3 (as a common mode) and you will find out that it will perform as well as at level #6. |

That Cobra 25 LTD has to be turned down to 1-2 watts dead key, I don't have any AM only radios. But I do know this much a CB radio final output transistor being driven this hard, (7 watts swing 11) shortens the life of the driver and final transistors in a hurry, they were not ment to drive that much wattage. It was designed to putout a maximum of 4 watts modulated AM carrier. That much power into a low drive amp. will burn it up quickly. |

everybody's right that your 7 watts is too much, S. BUT, maybe have the variable put in the RADIO, not the amp. the only time variable is needed in an amp is when it's used to drive a BIGGER amp. you want to adjust the dead key of the amp by adjusting the RADIO. as long as you don't have the radio butchered, bias class of the amp isn't all that important-it'll work fine AM & SSB. just make sure it has a built in DELAY. get the biggest 1 you can afford/your mobile will handle. you can always back it DOWN, but the only way to get more is buy another. |

Don't forget about the Magna-force 2 pill (SC2879) biased for SSB. It will take a 5 watt dead key. Wolverine. |

Well, with 2 watts of drive it should draw about 10 amps and the amp deadkey about 20 to 25 watts on low and swing around 100 to 130 watts or more. On high with a 2 watt deadkey about 45 to 55 watts and swing close to the same. ON ssb with about 10 watts power she will swing over 200, of course all of this on the 10 meter band. Mikefromms |

I might add, this would be the perfect little amp if you could turn the preamp off and on or at least be able to adjust it. mikefromms |

Mike's numbers are on with mine, same swing in high and low, just less sensitive, I run mine in low all the time, got better reports that way. Never seen over 200 on SSB but could be my meter. Chad |

I put in the Dave's Made, and X force remark because I think they have been the best for me, never bought one new, never paid major bucks for them used. Rich |

kl500, texas star dx350 & magnaforce mf350 are all in the $200 price range. my choice would be mag-300w +, tex-250w +& kl-250w +, in that order-both quality-wise & output-wise. maybe not 'cheap', but probably best bang for the buck. |

For under $100.00. The Palomar Elite 300 is a great choice, I have 2 friends that have one and are very happy with the amp. the amp. has 2 1446 transistors, and my friends say the preamp is very good. Carl CEF-357 |
