Hi, Anyone want to shed some light on this old Gold base Mic. I've just bought one from the US. Its a ceramic cartridge with a compressor cct. Audio quality is similar to SSK but lacks depth in the bass dept. Has good ouput but speech is a little thin?? When was it made? year? Before or after SSK,+3B? Why was it custom? I believe that it was Turner's first 6 wire mic., without the relay/elec. switch on the bottom. My sounds on the trebly side too. |

Ahhh, the Turner Custom Special 1. It's basically a +3B with gold paint. Good microphone. As you noted, it's a little high cut because of the ceramic element compared to the Super Sidekick with it's dynamic element. It's also got compression where the Super Sidekick doesn't. For years I've been looking for one that's in excellent condition or better. It's one of the few Turner communication microphones that I don't own yet, but because it's basically a +3B I'm waiting to find the right one. How do you like it? |

Hi Hollowpoint, that was an old post at the beginning of the year and Ive since got rid of the CS1. Its not the same audio as a +3B. Its sharper than the +3b with less bass. I think it was designed for older tube radios as I thing its a high impediance mic?? 73 Tim 26 OP 141 |

Because it's a power microphone it can be used with nearly any radio. The impedance of the element is buffered by the amplifier so the impedance of the radio isn't a concern. And because the output is variable over a wide range it can be adjusted to work with nearly any radio. I've never heard one, and it has a ceramic element just like the +3B, so I thought it would sound the same. The amplifier board could be different than the +3B which could definitely change the sound of the microphone. Perhaps Turner made it that way so it does better on DX? |

I dont the technicalities behind what does what and why but the audio was way to sharp for any radios I tried it on. It was like haveing a peg on your nose!! That bad... Tim 26 OP 141 |
