What size of power supply needed for KL 500 Amp? And how does this Amp perform? How many watts out-put can you get on AM-SSB??? Thanks. JIM/CENTRAL PA/CEF 375 |

Road Warrior, I would suggest at least a 30 Amp Power or more power supply if you are going to be running Both a Radio and AMP from it. They are a very GOOD PERFORMING LOW DRIVE AMPLIFIER. You can expect to see around 300 AM and 500 SSB. |

I have one that I have owned for a year or so? Lost track of the time. I use a an MFJ-4035MV (40amp peak) power supply in my house for both the amp and the radio. Never used it mobile. IT draws alot of amps above level three. It's a 6 stage amp. But then I have never needed more than level TWO! It puts out a respectable 250-300 Watts at level three for me. I usually operate it at level two only. Very clean and never runs hot. The spec sheet is on the web page of the manufac. at www.RMITALY.com |

I plan on just running a Amp from the power supply. I was thinking of getting a 50 Amp power supply, just to be safe. Thanks all for your feedback. JIM/CENTRAL PA/CEF 375 |

Ok, you said it has 6 settings for power. Could you tell me what it dead keys at on each of the 6 settings. So,from what i understand, i can use a 40 Amp power supply and that should run all 6 settings??? Will not be using a radio on it. Thanks JIM/CENTRAL PA/CEF 375 |

Road warrior, Sorry but I do not have one here to check and every radio and setup is different and the input power is also different depending on what you set your dead key at. What ever your radio DEAD KEY is set at is what will determine the Power Level that you have on each setting. I could not even try and guess what the output power for each setting would be. And yes a 40 AMP Power supply will handle ALL SETTINGS Hope this helps. Lon Tech808 |

Ok, thanks LON, I have a Ranger 2995dx, lowest RF setting is 2 3/4 Watts. Which is where i would run it. I'm not very familar with how these new Amps work, i haven't used an Amp since the 70's. They were tube type, Black Cat, Maco & a Raider Amp. Tune & load knobs from what i remember. LON, on your first post you said the KLV 500 should do 300, this is AM right??? Is this 300 watts on a swing or 300 watts dead key??? JIM /CENTRAL PA / CEF 375 |

I keep my radio set at 4 watts am and 12 watts ssb. If you looked at the web site of rmitaly you can see the input power is up to 30 watts... would probably drive that thing all the way to Italy... |

Hello Ca346, I also have the KL-500 and use it in my mobile. Are you driving your 500 with a 4 Watt dead key on AM? It is my understanding that 2.5 is a ideal setting.

PointMan: Yes, I am using 4 Watts input AM. Seems to be right for my set-up. I don't use much power 99 percent of the time, but it sure is there when I want/need it.... |

10-4 I know mine would start to run aweful hot at that setting.... I agree, these amps deliver a real nice punch when you want to get a little attention so to speak.... ;) |

I have a KL500 also and drive it with about 1 watt now, I did drive it with about 2.5 watts but it would get very hot and the the SSB delay would start acting up and the 40 amp constant power supply would dim and grown on setting 6. Now it seems good and just gets warm after a long keyup. I dont know if my meter is accurate but it is putting out about 200watt AM and about 250watts SSB. I am getting the KLV 1000 from copper this Christmas and am going to drive it with 1 watt so it should run cool and last a long time. Hey Lon, Do you know what the KLV 1000 would put out on a 1watt carrier and about 10 watts SSB? Thanks, Roger/airplane/CEF349
