Best commercially made antenna I have used has to be a Maco V 5/8 aluminum. Good transmit/recieve, not a bleed stick. |

I favor the I-Max 2K because of its 24' length and very broadband capabilities. If I was to go with an aluminum antenna, it would definately have to be the Maco V-5/8. Jeff. |

Best performing and favourite omni antenna's of all time are:- 1.Ham International Big Mac. 7/8 (ally) 2.Avanti Sigma 4. 3/4 or Tagra BT104 or Sirio Vector 4000 ( All same design, all ally. Vector wont withstand winds) 3.Avanti Sigma 2.5/8 (ally) 4.Ham Internatinal Sexy. 3/4 (ally) 5.Avanti Astroplane or Tagra Top One. 5/8 (both same design, all ally) 6.Antron Imax 2000 7.Antron A99 I still own all these antennae and have been performing test for many years on all of them. Nothing gets close to the Big Mac in performance although it’s let down due to its physical size and is prone to snap half way. Its now been discontinued and was made in Belgium with aviation ally, as were all Ham International antennas. If you own a Big Mac get in contact. 73. 26 OP 141 Tim

I originally started with a Starduster and then went to a Sigma 5/8 both aluminum before I moved on to a beam. Both were good antennas but I favored the Sigma. The Starduster and Sigma are long gone. |

I'd have to say my Penatrator 500 (hygain) was the best performer. I'm using a IMAX2000 now and it was easy to set up and talks real well. It has survived some real bad weather in the last two years. All things considered it's a great antenna. CEF335 |

From my own experience, I had my best performance from a Top One copy Astroplane (the one they sell here) low to the ground 10'. The old Starduster performed from good for me about 20' off the ground. The Shakespeare super big stick performed fanstatic from 70' in the top of a pine tree. I've owned a few other base g/p's but the one I'm most impressed with (after difference placements and experimenting) is the Top One Astroplane. I'm telling you from experience and lots of money spent, if you can't get an antenna up very high, the astroplane will more than compensate for loss of height if it is just placed 10' to the ring of the antenna above bare earth. It's simply amazing. I might just go and offer to buy back my A/P from the guy I sold it too a few weeks ago. That's how impressed I am with this antenna. Now, when I first got it, I made some mistakes in placement of this antenna and coax. Having corrected these problems, I can say nothing but good things about the performance of this antenna. And that's the truth. mikefromms |

PAR antennas makes a 11/10 meter one..... For years i ran cushcraft 6, 2 and 440 squailos stacked they worked well. The advanage to them is VERY small footprint and no rotor needed. The cushcraft stack lasted 20+ years and i still have one of the 6 meter ones which i used untill 2001. |

LOL. That's was the problem I ended up grounding the antenna and using a TVI filter and bought the neighbors a filter to put in line with their T.V. and ran the antenna up to 70 feet. That did the trick, very few complaints after that. I lived about 150 feet fron a pretty large lake and was running a firebird 750 along with a tricked out Pace 145 with upper and lowers and a Royce 40 channel SSB base station and had a ball. That was in Michigan and I even had a O,M, number. But eventually had to move and it was impossible to use that set-up in a California Sub-Division. But loved that old antennna and the Fire Bird was just kick butt. In those days so few people had 40 channels let alone SSB that you could talk DX with very ittle power so that's what I ended up doing. But like I said it was a great antenna until I gave up radio in the early 80's. |

I haven't had the I-Max very long. But with the RCI 2970DX covering 10,11&12 meters. The I-Max 2000 is a great match. I have a 1.5.1 or better from 24.900-28.500 and now that it's grounded well, it's under 2.5.1 ar 29.700. I imagine if I lost the 12 meters I could have a 1.5.1 on both 10 & 11 meters without much hastle. So far the hype is true |

If you believe in electronic theory then, a 5/8 wave omni antenna is the best. Hy Gain penetrator 500 was probably the first and best ever designed, very low swr. The Avanti's & Maco's and similar came later. Out of 30 omni base antenna's I have owned the best was the Hy Gain penetrator 500 . However if you want to cheat a little. No matter what you may have heard...The Antenna Specialist Super Scanner was both a great Omni antenna and a 2 element beam. 3 1/2 wave elements arranged in a triangle, when in omni mode..all were tri-phased...for a gain similar to the Hy Gain penetrator 500 if not slightly better. Then without a rotor you could switch to one of 3 directions and the antenna acted like a 2 element beam, with pretty decent side and back rejection. I still have this antenna as well as 3 new in the box in the garage. As far as discussions about construction: The antenna elements were well constructed and are thicker than most 5/8 wave omni top sections. It has never fallen apart or begun to rust. It will survive high wind better than most The swr is fine for 40 channels, and quite a bit above and below. Its when your are 100 channels above or below that you need a matcher. When these antennas came out, NO one had 100 channels above or below the CB band unless you were a ham. IMHO one of the best all-around antennas ever.

Well I have been in the hobby for 25 years starting at age 4 with a ch 14 hand held from radio shack. I have so many favorite antennas I could list hundreds.I guess the most DX and trouble free antennas I have owned would be the Shakespeare Big Stick (base), and the 5.5 foot Francis whip (mobile). No swr worries ever! |

My new favorite is the Imax 2000 with the GP/kit. Simply amazing that something this simple could be so broadbanded and talk and receive like this does. Second favorite Astroplane, third; Starduster. There's a lot of antennas tied for fourth. Some perhaps better than my first and second choices, but I don't want an antenna with metal prongs sticking out to the side for wind, ice and wind to destroy. mikefromms |

Oh Geez, nothing like a nice little stroll down amnesia lane... In '76 I was a Sophomore and the CB craze was in it's heyday. I had been CBing since I got my 1st 1 watt/2 Channel Midland Walkie-Talkie for my 8th Birthday in '67 so it was a ton of fun in '76 to see every other neighbor getting into the hobby... until the bleedover problems started!! Back then I tried about every omni-vertical I could get my hands on and I believe the best overall was the Taylor Grandslammer GLR4 5/8 wave with 4 1/4~^ radials. The whole antenna was constructed with 6061-T6 aluminum and though it was a coil fed 5/8, it seemed a little more receive efficient than my old faithful Hy-gain Penetrator 500. Shouldn't have sold it back in '78 as I've never seen another anywhere since, ever! I was lucky enough to find an A/S JamRam new-in-the-box about 5 years ago and since it was also all 6061-T6 I traded the radiator for the Penetrator's and now have an all 6061-T6 Penetrator 500 radiator, performance didn't change but I feel a lot better about it in the big winds as that basic 2025 alum will fatigue a lot sooner. I tried a Sigma 5/8 and it was neck-and-neck with the Wilson Alpha V-5/8, Penetrator 500, and a hair under the Taylor GLR4 on receive, same on TX. I didn't like the performance of my Sigma 4 26lb antenna, awesome construction but the signal seemed to fall off about 30% sooner than the 5/8 waves, 90 miles (flatland) from the 5/8 waves and about 65-70 miles from the Sigma 4 3/4 wave. Had a Super-Scanner but didn't even see the performance of the 5/8s from it even when in beam mode, sold it and never looked back. My Imax2000 seemed to be about 1-1.5 'S' units down from the metal 5/8s, even with 9' guywire radials. Favorite all time onmi would be the Taylor GLR4, Penetrator 500 a REAL CLOSE 2nd along with the Avanti Sigma 5/8 and Wilson Alpha V-5/8. - Now I find I want to buy one of those "Not your father's Penetrator" Interceptor 10Ks and test it against my Penetrator 500 to see if a different type of matching network can actually make as significant a difference as they claim, after all it's simply matching the reactance to a set 5/8 wave length... I'm fairly skeptical but we'll see. - BUT, all-in-all, my homebrew 27' 5 element Quad punched holes where there seemed to be no conditions present, and killed my neighbor's Moonraker 6, he couldn't even hear Australia until quite a few minutes after I started a QSO with them and his beam sat 25' higher! They say Quads open and close the band... I agree. Enjoy the book! |

I had the Archer .64 that Radio Shack sold for a few years. It outperformed every other CB antenna in the neighborhood, and there were quite a few (Astroplanes, Starduster, Sigma 5/8, etc). It was the best talking 11 meter omni directional antenna I ever used ...until it got hit by lightning. |

I hear alot better with the Imax than any other antenna I have had before. We have 2 erected at 60 feet and one for backup. I worried when I put the first one up about high wind. When Katrinas wind came up we had 60 mph wind gusts and have had some big windy thunderstorms. Indiana winters get real windy too. I do not worry any more. I'm sure this antenna can survive 100 mph wind. As for performance they have good band width. 24mhz-29mhz SWR below 1.5 with 1.1 in the cb band. I know there are alot of antennas out ther that may be able to shame the Imax but the performance I get has earned me respect locally and taken my DX to the next level. So long it is makes for great recieve and I will try no other until I decide to put up a beam. Any antenna will perform poorly if not set up correctly. Grounding and tuning and location is keys to performance. |

Hey Hotwire, have you tried adding 27' guywire radials(3/4wave) with an insulator down at the 27' point? The 9'(1/4wave) radials also work well, but try simply putting a ceramic 'egg' type insulator in the guy wire 27' down from the base of the antenna and watch that Imax come alive! Good luck, and if you add those radials please post on here what, if any, improvement they give you. Thanks! ...anyone heard from Reno Maxx lately? And a big "Hey there" Mr.'TS-930s-Phil'! -You get a decent disguise antenna up at that new desert home yet? I understand flagpoles are federally exempt from CC&Rs, do I hear inverted Vee, (even flagpoles can need to be guyed...) -Or how about a 1/2wave or 5/8wave tuned (hollow fiberglass housing) flagpole? -Are the wheels turning yet????? 73, Dx89 |

Niceface I will look into it. 27 feet down my guy wires is almost to the ground. My Imaxs are on 30 foot push ups. Also I use vinly coated guy wires and they are insulated at the antenna base. Interesting so I will get my wheels turning, thanks. |

Marconi no ideal behind it. It just happened that way from the type of line I bought. Wanted something strong that won't rust at least for a while. Not stranded braid but solid standed so I can twist the wire onto my turn buckles, These have a real thick vinly coating so I suppose they are insulated from the antenna. I'm sure the vinly will give and may make electrical contact to the antenna base someday. If there is something I should be doing otherwise please educate me. Should I be using bare guy wires? |

For a "OMNI" my favorite would be a MACO V5/8 GP. But my all time favorite is a MS-119 Super Scanner. It is an OMNI and DIRECTIONAL. I found one New in the Box that had been stored away since the 70's. They had bought two of them, one to put up and the other for a spare in case the 1st one quit working. WELL the 1st one they put up is still working so I was able to buy the other one. Anyway I now have it 50ft in the air and working great. I had one back in the 70's and had great fun with it. Had no luck contacting any CEF Club members today, I guess the radio signals were frozen here in Wisconsin. High temp around 10 Deg. today. hate to do this, but wally ain't in on the joke...it IS quite possible that ALL of the jo gunn antennas are very well built. however it is their made up gain claims that ruins it & is the JOKE. AUDIO GAIN....what the %@*$ is AUDIO GAIN, coming out of an ANTENNA no less?? their power gain/power multiplication claims quite possibly have SOME basis on fact, but that darned AUDIO GAIN thing.....their beams, though maybe well made are HEAVY. 2 friends, years back, 1 with a 6 star, the other with an 8 star, had nothing but rotator problems. yeah, there are more then a few amateur arrays that have substantial windload, but these things just spun even the BIGGEST of rotators right around in their housings-repeatedly. mr coily's replacement for BOTH the enforcer & excalibur @ $450 & the interceptor 10K by jay at around $300 round out the built-to-take-punishment-from-the-environment with who-knows-what-kind-of-REAL-performance type of antennas. actually, NEITHER claims ANY audio gain, & i've found BOTH to be rather honest in THEIR appraisal of THEIR antennas. had mr coily NOT discontinued his $250 enforcer, i was considering one. that said, my $80 maco v5/8 has performed flawlessly for nearly 18 years, including having to be reshaped more then once due to ice trying to pretzel-ize it. bruce, bruce, bruce... |

Bruce's rule of antenna gain .... 1) Measure the h and E planes and figure gain out for yourself. 2) If you get more than 3 DB for a 18 foot tall antenna ....... You screwed up. |

Incredible coverage. >SUPERSCANNER< Two Superscanners mounted on a single mast in a colinear array arrangement (with proper spacing) permanently fixed to OMNI position. Requires guy lines. I wonder if the superscanner will make a comeback someday? This omni set up was INCREDIBLE for long-range, fringe groundwave. Other than that my imax 2000 is doing a good job!

Imax is still my favorite omni. I have the groundplane kit on mine and at 101 ft. in the air I'm living large. I get lots of call from stations out there in the under the 1 s-unit land. You know you're getting out when all of those distant mobiles are calling your handle. Sunking Mikefromms |

I had very good luck in the 70s with a Astroplane. The older Stardusters were a good antenna it was my very first base antenna. I like the Top One I have now. But I guess the best one in my view was an older Signal Engineering Goldenrod 180s. I know its a 1/2 wave but that thing had the best receive on it I had ever had. |

Super Penetrator is and has been my antenna for 11 meters for the past 31 yrs. now! Bought it new in 1976 for $39.00 and it still does its job flawlessly. Its been in more ice, snow, and high wind thunder storms in its lifetime than you could possibly count, and is still as straight and the swr is still as good as the day it was put up in 1976.If it would ever come down for any reason I would go with the Interceptor 10k from Jay just because of it being designed after the Penetrator. For my multiband use I use a Cushcraft R7,another fine antenna for its intended use as far as I'm concerned. These are only my opinions as I must admit that I never tested any other omnis out since I never felt the need to do so. I have talked all over the world with these omnis and am quite satisified with their performance. |

Back in the early 80s they band metal CB antennas and I brought three Archer .64 antennas from R/S for 27 bucks, gave two of them away to friends that replace there 5/8 ground plans. I put the other .64 up in 1990 when I retired and moved to Las Vegas. My friend who lived on a hill in SF,Ca talked between 100 to 300 miles running a Cobra 148GTL with a Messingger 175 on SSB until Charlie got him in 1984. The .64 would only take about 200 watts on SSB but you did not need power with it. I run a Maco 5/8 now and its good, but its not an Archer .64 and you can tak take that to the back...........walterb (Oldtimer) |

Well after 3 days of ICE now and MORE ICE coming through tonight and tomorrow and about 1" to 1-1/2" of ice on them now, they are still up and the #3-elements on the beam's and #8 - 4' elements on the omni are NOT bent or broken. My #1 choice for an OMNI Antenna is the: SIGMA MANTOVA TURBO. My #1 choice for a BEAM Antenna is the: SIGMA DIRETTIVA 3 ELEMENT BEAM. Lon~Tech808 CEF#808~HAM#001 CVC#002 Tech808@copperelectronics.com

"The .64 wave is one of the best kept secrets in CB and 10 meter antennas. Not since the Super Penetrator 500 Gold has there been a .64 wave antenna widely available. A .64 wave antenna is the highest gain single element design there is with 0.4 dB more gain on the horizon (free space) than a 5/8 wave element." theres my answer. lol. thanks lon. |

just to let yall know.... i did buy locally to help the local cb shop out theyre buisness is really slow...sorry copper lol....but ull get more buisness from me as usual anyway....1 s unit difference close in, 1 1/2 further out....gpk dramatically reduced tvi, static noise way down...recieve is up....while i realize some of the improvements are due to just the imax and not the gpk..... it has shown how truly "dirty" and limited my a99 was......thumbs up to solarcon. great antenna. i think every bit as good as the shakespeare army super big stick.... |

I have an Imax 2000 up now. It replaced an A99 and does about 1 S unit better recieve at the same height (22ft.). It gets out similarly better. The Antenna is a lot quieter also, probably due to the much lower input capacitance. The match is 1.2:1. I have yet to install a GPK, which should help even more. I had an Avanti Astroplane for years and it was a good antenna, about the same performance as the A99, though orders of magnetude quieter recieve and wider SWR range. I've read that it has no matching network, which is probably the reason for the quiet recieve. The Astroplane had the quietest recieve of any antenna I've owned. It's probably my favorite because of that. I think that if I could mount it way up there, it would probably be the best, though the Imax would probably still outperform it at the same height. The Astroplane really is a 5/8 wave antenna. It doesn't look like it, but it is, it's a folded 5/8 wave. However, the Imax is a .64 wave and should still outperform it. |

Lonestarbandit: The Archer .64 omni-directional ground plane sold by Radio Shack was an aluminum offering. The Crossbow was a 1/2 wave fiberglass offering. I've owned both and several other CB base station antennas over the years. The Archer .64 was the best performing omni-directional CB base station antenna I ever used. |

I bought a Ham International "Big Pole" from Copper back around 1990 for 25 bucks. It's an 18'aluminum stick. It still has the old gray mini coax on it. I've run over 1 KW through it. We stil use it for an omni. |

Here's my 2 cents worth. Had a Sigma 5/8, lightning bait, good performer though. Antron 99, still have it, good product depending on use and location, good on 10/11/12. Radio Shack .64, wind made a Pecaso of it the same day it went up. Had a Big Stick for a while, darn lightning! My first Astroplane was with me for over ten years and lightning got the loop so I've bought a new Top One recently. Can't wait for my back to heal so I can put up my antenna farm again. |

Fiberglass is almost mandated for CB base antennas. To be sold as a CB antenna it must be insulated to 14KV This is why aluminum ones are called 10 meter antennas. http://law.justia.com/us/cfr/title16/16-2.0.1.2.35.html#16:2.0.1.2.35.1.1.4 I guess they think we are to stupid to keep them away from wires ...... 1/4 wave ground plain, radial, aluminium at 30ft above the roof ridge plus a 'Bill Bonica' telescopic 1/2 vertical for camping/field trips away. Both fed with RG58 coax. Each were awesome antennas,I worked the world on these back in the 1980s with just 2 watts AM. In more recent years,1986 onwards,an Australian manufactured Mobile One Station-master 1/2 wave vertical, aluminium antenna.Good receive in and with a antenna matcher/tuner out of its 10/11m/12m tuned range.Extremely good on 7Mhz/40m.Worked a station some 200miles away on 1850khz. :-) |

My first base antenna was a Lafayette 1/4 wave groundplane drooper antenna, and I got good results with it. About 1972 or so, I got a Penetrator, and my mother is still using it to this day. After getting married and moving several times, I've had an Astro Plane that worked very well; then a Wintenna Spider that was very broadbanded (which was a good thing since I converted a Kraco 23 ch to 65 channels in 1977, and a Tiger 40 to 256 channels in 1978). Then a couple Signal Eng 180's & a Thunder 8 (which was GREAT). Presently I'm using a simple dipole, and am now making another wire dipole antenna based on Francis' 3/4 Wave *__* mobile antenna, to use with my S9's full frequency range. My mobiles; (I used a short A/S Mag mount with a Johnson Whiteface (20 Watts) and talked 60-70 miles in NC circa 1971), but my fav's are, 102" whips (2 of them with homemade switch to switch between the two, or both at the same time), SkipShooter (used 2 of them at same time also), UglyStick and SolarCon's Quad Wound. regards |

I like the Imax 2000. I made a 3 radial 18' gpk out of aluminum electric fence wire to nylon rope for it. That with the Altelcon coax, works great. It is very easy to set up. I have had the Imax, A99, Maco V58. The Imax is my favorite. If it were damaged I would go back with another of the same. Even if I had more time to fool with the Maco I would still go with the Imax. To each their own I guess. |

MACO V 5/8 Hands Down. I had a real Starduster back in the day and I liked it. And a real astroplane too. I also have a few A-99s, but I'm using a MACO. If I needed an all-D today, I'd get me another MACO V 5/8 without hesitation !!! I have 3, two in use and one for backup !!! Traveler...... traveling threw the Tree Tops to your Town... All have their use and all are the best. I like the Astroplane/Top One. Good pattern and I live close to the Atlantic Ocean with sudden storm possibilities. The AP doesn't catch a lot of wind and will give me 10/11/12 meter coverage. it will also work from ground to 60 legal feet. My 2 cents worth. 73 Pressman

I have owned the Antron 99, several Imax 2000s, the Astroplane, and the Maco V58. The Imax 2000 is a good performing antenna if you don't have neighbors. I like the Maco V58 the best because I hear better, and transmit cleaner without messing up the neighbor's TV, plus I get better signal reports. |

I am very impressed with the Sirio D 27 antenna. I purchased it years ago, simply because I needed a side mount 10/11/12 meter antenna for my secondary station in the bedroom. I originally thought it would be a "ok" antenna for the situation but it is an exceptional antenna and I have made four confirmed contacts in Antarctica, Wallis Island, Wake Island, French Polynesia, Reunion Island, etc , etc. I have a local ham friend and we work dx while talking on 2 meter and he swears that I am on a hot spot. I am very pleased with this antenna and I will most certainly purchase the Sirio four element beam in the near future. Don't underestimate the Sirio products, I did and was pleasantly surprised. |

Hello all, new to the forum but not to CB. Used to do a lot of chatting back in the mid 1970’s but family and work kind of took place. Now I’m retired and wanting to get back into the world of radio. Back then I used to use a “Ringo” antenna and seemed to work fine for me at the time. Two of my friends used to come over the house on a regular basis and we’d sit in the basement and take turns on the radio while having a few beers. Ah the old days. So anyway as mentioned I want to get back on the air so I did a little research on antennas and found that the Solarcon A99 was considered a good inexpensive unit to go with and I feel I found one with the ground planes for a great price and bought it. Then I found this site and I hear stories about this antenna causing TVI for neighbors. Panic city here. I live in a typical New England small town where the houses are kind of close together. So here’s my question: what do I do if I put my antenna up a bit higher than my roof and using the ground planes but still TVI the neighbors? I don’t want to start bad feelings with them after living here for 26 years and yet I just spent a chunk of money and work putting this up? Any suggestions would be appreciated., Thanks in advance. |

Hi Bill ! Welcome back to radio ! And welcome to Copper's Forum. Before we get into the antenna, every CB station should have a couple of things to help it be TVI friendly. (1) Good coax--CA 400 cable comes to mind. (2) DF 3000 low pass filter (3) NO amplifier (4) Use an inline receive preamp (5) Try to get the bottom of the antenna 36ft above ground. (6) Take the NO CODE Tech Ham test so you can enjoy 10m and 2m and, and, and. Then up grade and enjoy more !!!!!!! Sub builder, cool. BTW What kind of radio? The Antron 99 like any antenna has it's peculiarities. Tech 833 wrote some nice antenna info on Copper. He's our antenna Elmer. 73 Pressman

Press_man, thanks for your response. I will take your advice and get these items done. I am currently visiting a friend up here in Toronto (I live in Connecticut) and been here for 3 weeks and had lots of free time on my hands. So I have 2 older 40 ch cb radios in my basement at home but can't remember what brands. While up here I did a lot of web serfing and ended up buying the antenna. When I get home next week it should be there. I will put it up then try out those radios. If they fail then I will buy a new one. I like the idea of getting my ham license also. Not to worry about over powering my CB, that won't happen. Thanks again. 41 years building nuclear subs for the US Navy |

The older CBs may need to be recapped. The electrolytics break down and leak. Use the same value but increase the volt capasity to 16v or 25v. Get rid of the old 10v blues. Or, get a new rig. You spent 41 yrs building things to fly under water. I spent 25 yrs building and modifying things to fly in the air. Then I switched to swimming pools till I couldn't do it no mo. 73 Pressman
