Highlander,

What kind of radio are you running it with? How many watts are you driving it with? What kind of PEP do you see?

Usually I use my Galaxy DX 2517 to drive it, 2 watt deadkey, radio swings to around 15 watts. I get about 90 watt deadkey out of the amp. On SSB, variable power on the radio all the way down gets about 18-20 watts in, I see around 250 peak on my astatic 600 meter. Not a true pep reading meter, so your mileage may vary.

I'd like to know more about the KLV-400 my self . I'm hoping someone can tell me if this amp could be retuned for another band, it is designed for 26-30Mhz operation but wondering if could be modified or retuned to 50-54 Mhz or even 50-52MHZ . Any Idea's or suggestions on this post email me at spider24112@yahoo.com

Hello,, I'm not to sure about these klv 400 i have one sent it back.. ran good for 3 weeks but just started blowing the fuse then i replaced fuse it shot fire back through the hi side tube!! so i put a new set of tubes in and it blew out the hi side tube again !! Know in the mean time 5 of the klv 400 right here with in spitting distance have done the same thing 1 out of the 5 has been able to save his for know, when his fuse blew he took an unhooked the fan and went to radio shake got a 110v fan and hooked it up direct to the ac power... With that said i believe that the transformer is to small,,, sense when i would key up the amp it would draw the fan down..Unlike the KLV350 the fan would speed up when keyed... if i had to take a guess RM... is putting the same transformer in the KLV400, and is just in need of more transformer power!! Note<<>> all of these amps had less than 4 watts of dead key and 15 to 30 watts of swing driven in to them with a standing wave of 1 to 1.5,,,1.5 being the swing not keyed swr...I'm speaking for all 5 unit on the average !! If i forgot anything or learn more i'll post on in the future 73s

Justone,

By chance would the radio you and the other 5 have been using with the KL400 is one of the below radios?

NOTICE! Magnum S-3, S-6, S-9 and S-45 Owners

Do so at your Own risk of damage to your amplifier and / or your radio and amplifier.

When you are dead keying 1 watt and swinging 30 + watts into a Low Drive Amplifier this is way to much and you will cut the life of your tubes in half or blow the tubes and/or the amplifier fuses which can result in damage of your Amplifier and or Amplifier and Radio.

The Tubes on a Low drive amplifier are not designed to take 30+ watts of modulation swinging into it.

And this appears to be happening quite frequently lately.

Copper Electronics will no longer cover amplifier repairs or replacement of amps under warranty when damaged by improperly using these radios with any amplifier or tube amplifier sold by Copper Electronics.

USE WITH AN AMPLIFIER

The Magnum S-3, S-6, S-9 and Omega Force S-45 are designed to work with a 4 pill Amplifier like the Texas Star 500 or Similar Amplifier that uses 4 - 2SC2879's.

"DO NOT ATTEMPT" to run the Magnum S-3, S-6, S-9 or the Omega Force S-45 with any 2 PILL Amplifier!

Also if you use the Magnum S-3, S-6, S-9 or Magnum Omega Force S-45 with an Amplifier that uses an Exciter/Driver you MUST have the radio adjusted for a Dead Key of 4 Watts and NO More than 12 watts PEP when using the Top Gun Modulator.

It is Highly Suggested that you have a professional do this.

You will also Notice that in none of the Reviews posted on the Copper Forum or Information supplied by Copper Electronics or Magnum International is the use of the S_3, S-6, S-9 or Omega Force S-45 recommended with ANY TUBE AMPLIFIER.

Just wondering?

Wrk3,

The new magnums have to much power with the top gun modulater to be used with them. You take a chance on blowing both the Amp and the radio up if something goes wrong.

I personally would tend to listen and follow the mans advice that had them designed, tested and built rather than even take a chance on blowing an amp or a $300.00 dollar radio up.

Not the KL400 moble not base.
Are these the same types of amps what is the difference in them?

Leonard,

The RM Italy KL VIP Series are the EXACT Same amplifers as the others only with a Wood Grain face.

That is the only difference.

I guess the Wood Grain face makes people feel like a VIP.

But they do look better than the regular black face.

KL VIP Series Amplifiers

Hope this helps,
