Just wondering if the receive on the new big stick is that much better than it's old 16ft counterpart? I used to have a 16ft big stick and the ears weren't as good as the Star duster. Just wondering about your experiences. Is the new big stick pretty much like an A-99? Mikefromms |

The ABS is not like the big stick. It will work a little better than the old big stick did. |

I have and still use the old two piece Big Stick, and my ears are all over the place, I have had it for 27 years and it really still gets out. |

I did not say the big stick is not a good antenna, that would be far from the truth. I said the ABS will work a little better than the old big stick. That is the truth. Naturally, the ABS is a little longer than the big stick. That usually means gain. The big stick is a sleeve dipole with a 1/4 wave element and a 1/4 wave sleeve. The ABS is also a sleeve dipole, but the radiator is a 3/8 wave element. |

The pictures of the new Army Big Stick show the big stick larger in diameter. It looks solid. I ran the 16 ft version the Super Big Stick for years and it got out good. It was not as good as a Starduster though. I proved that myself.. I'm talking about the old Starduster. Some guy I traded with then traded back ran big watts through my Big Stick could have hurt the performance. Maybe he knew it and that's why he traded back? I was young. Don't know. Mikefromms |

Is the new Big Stick ABS or NBS or or they two different big sticks? A whole group of us used to run big sticks. Most of them were the 16ft models and they didn't do quite as good as the metal ground plane. They were easy to put up and got the job done, though. mikefromms |

I hope I don't ask too many questions. I know you techs tire of hearing the same old same old. Sometimes some of the forum members add some really good advise from their experiences. I like to hear from many people and see what they say. If a lot of people say the same thing, there has to be something to it. This alone with the techs knowledge and research makes for very accurate information. Also, this kind of discussion keeps member coming back to the forum to talk about one of their favorite pass times. Enjoy the site a lot. mikefromms |

mikefromms, The easiest way to find out about something is to use the SEARCH AREA here on the Forum to the left of this column. You can type in the name of any product and then see what everyone has posted about it. You have 24 pages listed on the NBS 2010 antenna, or type in Army BIG Stick and then you will be able to read what everyone has posted. It save's a lot ot time as most every question has been asked. You can SEARCH by Date or Keyword. And be ready to read a lot. Lon Tech808 |

Not a lot of useful information here on the new NBS 2010 Big Stick. Which is newer, the Imax 2000 or the NBS 2010 Big Stick? mikefromms |

I am using the Shakespear NBS2010 and an A99 as well as a 3 element yagi. My QTH is Auckland City New Zealand. The NBS2010 absolutely eats the A99. Using a 100watt Ham rig I can get contacts in the town of Cambridge 100miles to the south. Also I have a friend who lives 50 miles to the east on the other side of a 2000ft mountain range and can hear him running barefoot with 12 watts pep. A real good antenna well worth the expence. When the skip is running I have no problem Dxing North America and occasionally Europe. |

Interesting. I know the A-99 is a terrific antenna. I'm glad to know that someone likes the NBS2010 better. Maybe I should rephrase this: I'm glad that the new big stick is evidently better than the old big stick. I had an idea it would outperform the A-99. Thanks for sharing. mikefromms |

Santa, Dont bother with those GP kits, just put it up at least 20ft above any roofs or structures and give it a good feedline, I used RG213 and start txing. SWR from 26.285 to 27.800 remains fairly constant at around 1.2:1 Old Pirate |

Santa, as Oldpirate said, you don't need a gpk for the big stick. If you get a good one to start with and put that good 213 coax on it and get it as high as you can, you should have 10 or 20 years of troublefree service. Some of the techs on here suggest coating the entire antenna with clear coat primer to preserve the fiberglass. From what I'm reading here and there and hearing on the air, these new 2010 big sticks are a big improvement over the old big stick and the A-99. And might I add, anything said to be better than an A-99 has to be a great antenna. mikefromms |

You know, if it wasn't for that dan-burn Imax 2000 the NBS 2010 would be my ground plane (?) of choice. It would be fun to own both of them like one man I know in the area. This man has the NBS about 60 ft in the air and the Imax about 110 ft n the air. I wonder which one is better? LOL! mikefromms |

A friend of mine was so impressed with my NBS 2010 that he wanted one for himself, unfortunately we have just found out that Shakespear is going out of the CB antenna market and these antennas are no longer being made. What a pity to loose a fine product like that. I guess it's a case of "He who hesitates has lost." |

Check ebay. I can't believe I just said that! I do not like ebay. However, if you simply MUST own something no longer made, and money is no object, then ebay is better than nothing. |

Copper probably has a slew of them left over since the Imax 2000 seems to be the hottest selling g/p. Hard to believe that Shakespeare is quitting the CB business. mikefromms |

Since Shakespeare is not making them anymore, I want to buy one even if it is just stored in the barn. Might need it someday. As you said Phoenix, can't find one anywhere....well..I haven't checked e-bay, but I don't trust a lot of the folks there. mikefromms |

I bought a Maco v5/8 from a local dealer....couldn't get a match lower than 3. I worked all day on it. I bought a new a-99 from another local dealer. 1.1 on the match. Ran it that way for a couple months. Pulled it down from my 40' tower, and added the hub & ground plane elements from the maco to the a-99, and using someone 25 miles away that I regularly talk to as a reference, his signal went up 1 s-unit. Better than that, 80% of the static noise is gone. I also run another a-99 without the radials with another radio for recieving other channels, and there is alot of difference. Yes...I have switched the coax to verify it. Thanks! Love this forum. |
