It should behave pretty much like a standard 3 element beam like the maco m103c. A little more gain than the y-quad, but it might not be that noticeable on the air, especially for DX. Locally might show a little increase, but in my mind it wouldn't be worth losing the ability to change polarization as you can now. But if the price was right, I would grab it for the future or a backup.

I wonder if the y-quad can be converted into an actual quad element for the driven element--that would be an upgrade!

thanks-the y-quad does have the "punch" on hoz.for dx-but the rx seems to be "hurting" on vertical for local- iam running a sigma-4 about 50' away from the y-quad (tops about the same hight appro.60')-did repeated tests with 3 local "fixed" stations-on tx the y-quad did between 1-4 "s" units better (different radios of coarse)-about what it should be-but on rx it is solid 2 "s" units less then the sigma-4-

thanks for the respond-take care

Those are strange results--I wonder if maybe you are getting more noise out of the Sigma, or maybe you have a coax /feedline issue with your beam. High feedline loss might not be as noticeable on transmit as it might be for receiving--You can always overcome feedline loss on the transmit side by increasing power, but you can't do that on the receive side.

run top of the line coax-just ran 300 watts into a dummy load just to check-did a second check the sigma 4 (you know it stands over 30' tall itself)is about 10 higher up then the y quad i have to guess that is the problem-taking it down this weekend-goning to try the astro beam-
thanks again!

Hello.
I have a fairly NEW (i should say MINT cond since i took it out of the sealed box!) astrobeam that i took out of the new sealed box to see what it would do for me.. Assembled per the directions with the coax pigtail my swrs went way over a 1.5=1 all 40. I took off the pigtail and just ran it with the regular coax and my swrs went pretty much down to a 1.2-1 all 40. I still have the antenna but its put up in the garage. Im keeping it because it hasnt been available new since about 1978 or so and im sort of a collector of the older antennas . I also have a avanti sigma 5/8, astroplane, Hy Gain P 500 and 2 moonraker 4s'. I use a moonraker 4 on my tower and a avanti sigma 4 (the big honkin 30' antenna like Tram@396 uses)as a standby. All in all i like the older aluminum antennas..

$300.00 for the astroplane????? WOWWWW! I should get $500.00 for my astrobeam with the box!!!!
I had mine up for 3 weeks and the swrs were pretty good after i dumped the little coax jumper that they included in the box.. I didnt really talk off of it i just pretty much wanted to see how it would react over a wider ranger of frequencys.. I think ill keep the astrobeam simply because it is no longer made and ive always liked the astrobeam.. Id love to find either a good used astroplane or possibly a NMIB version NOT the newer version.

Best 3 element I've ever seen. Throw it up and you rarely ever tune it.

i ran one for a few years, loved it for its size.

it has fair gain and with some tweeking it can have a very mean back door.

but if i was offered 300 bucks for it, it would be gone! and something abit longer would go in its place.

Did any of you guys that had one or still has one ever use that pigtail coax that comes with the antenna? I tried to use mine and it made the swrs go well over a 2. Took it off and added the regular RG coax and the swrs went to a 1.2-1 all 40.

To Lon Tech808, Thanks a lot, greatfully appreciated for your help. This way, generally run a 4 el Deltaloop with an old Ferris 5000 ( Cobra 136 with 858 chip ). Also a home grown Astroplane, much stronger than the original design. Frank, South Australia.

I have a astro beam up. I bought it new in 1978, it is still working, swrs: 1:1 all the way through 500 some channels, pigtail harness works good with mine. you can run as much power, as you want, I used a maco 300 for awhile, in the late 90,s I hooked up a D&A 250.
