The reason I chose the Wilson 5000 mag mount over the Wilson 1000 mag mount is not because I expect to run a lot of power. The Wilson 5000 can be unscrewed from the mag mount for removal. It includes a plastic cap that can be placed over the mounting connector on the base to keep water out. If I am going through a car wash it is a lot easier to unscrew the antenna than to pry the magnet mount up off the vehicle. It is a lot easier on the paint too. Just keep the paint on the vehicle waxed real well under the mag mount. The larger loading coil in the 5000 has less loss than the one in the 1000... but I would expect that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in real life tests. Both the 1000 and 5000 are fine antennas. 101 |

101 I thought the 1000 unscrewed too. I have the 5000 but have never messed with the 1000 that much but I thought it was the same way ??? Correct me if I am wrong...Eddie |

Biged, I have had 2 Wilson 1000s, and it to DOES unscrew from the mag.The mags are virtually the same, with the exception of the size of the coax. The 5000 uses heavier coax. DX431 |

Biged: Yeah, you are right... I was thinking of the 'Lil Will when I wrote about the 5000 being able to be unscrewed. 101 |

Whew !!! I thought I was going bonkers. I didnt know the coax was different. Regardless, I replaced the standard coax with some good stuff, I am not sure what size it is but its got the clear outer jacket on it. And the reason I did so was because of the PL259 was almost falling off. So I figured I might as well replace the whole thing. Wilson could have come up with a better way to secure the PL259...Eddie |

Eddie, those pls on them suck! I have replaced a few myself. I have heard they are shrink wrapping them now. Haven't seen one, so I'm going on what I have read. |

Be aware.... both the 1000 and 5000 may well take the wattage they claim, but the coax they come with will not. The 1000 with rg58 coax is good for about 400-500 peak, the 5k with rg8x coax is good for about 800 peak. If you're running more peak power than that on a regular basis you need to look into upgrading the coax. |

What coax would you recommend to replace the stock coax? 213? I have the mag mount on one car, and a roof mount on the SUV. The Wilson 5000 uses a connectot that looks like a "Firering" at the coil. If I replace the coax should I look at a different connection to the coil? Also, is maintaining an 18' length non the coax adviseable? |

I don't know why you would need to replace the coax unless your gonna run a really large amplifier. I've run a TS 667 into a Wilson 1000 roofmount with the original coax for years without any problems. I even used it with a Wilson 1000 magnet mount for about a year before I decided to cut a hole. |
