Is the Maco Comet a good mid size for both vertical and horizontal? Is there a better one in the same size range?

In the same size and weight category, I'd suggest to go with the Maco M103HV. It offers the flexibility of tuning the horizontal & vertical elements to different frequencies (10 & 11 meters), without sacrificing gain. You cannot optimize the Comet's 'trap' (receiving element) for dual frequencies.
