Gain on the horizon. A 1/4 wave has less gain than a half wave. A half wave has less gain than a 5/8 wave.

1/4 wave has the highest angle of radation good for dx . no matching device required.simple low cost antenna that works good.
1/2 wave slightlu lower angle of radation.but has matching device and maybe a tiny bit of loss in it
5/8 wave lowest angle of radation best for long ground wave talking 50 plus miles. as tech 833 said the 1/4 wave has less gain then other two
but in a few instances it MAY work best.
