i have not been active in cbs for 25 years. i am starting back and have a few questions. i am going to buy either a texas star sweet 1600 or a 667v. the radio is a galixe 99. i know that i wont be able to drive the sweet 1600 to its full output, but i should be able to get around 800 watts out of it and with the smaller radio it should run a little cooler. is there any other disadvantage about this set up. which one would be better. i will be using it at home and in the mobile |

as designed, the dx1600 with 8 2sc2879's requires 40 watts carrier/150 watts PEP to reach its max output of around 1000 real, effective, efficient PEP watts. more can be seen, but is usually nothing more then harmonics & other trash. the galaxy 99 is a 2 transistor final radio, about 10 watts max carrier & 25-30 watts PEP. you will not see 800 out of the dx1600 using the galaxy 99, but more like 200-300 PEP. the only real disadvantage of that setup is not getting everything out of the 1600 that it is capable of, and yes, it will run cooler. the dx1600v, or whatever they call it, has a built in 2x2sc2879 driver, gets roughly the same output as the non-driven version, but can also be run as 150 watt driver only, and WILL work with the galaxy 99, if its power is lowered a bit. the dx667v will work with the galaxy 99, which again will need to be turned down, and get you about half the max wattage of the dx1600, or about 500 PEP with 150-200 carrier. the dx500v would be a better match to the galaxy 99, as it will handle full power with less risk of self-destruction, and get pretty much the same output as the 667v. |
