Is Copper considering adding this mic to the catalog? One sharp looking mic fellas and you know it would sound good on almost any radio! It would be great to have another fine Astatic microphone at the lowest price anywhere!

Hotwire,

Last information I had on the Barjan / Astatic AST-878 DM Desk Microphone is that all of them were recalled/sent back due to manufacturing problems as all arrived DOA.

As far as I know Barjan has not released them again or yet.

Wow! Thats a bummer! I hope they decide to keep them on the market AFTER they redesign them. What a terrible screw up in quality control! I'm hoping they have as good of audio as the mobile mics do. In fact, they should be every bit as good or better than the mobile mics. Its sharp looking base mic that would look good on my desk! Oh well, I still have my JCD-201M!

Thanks for the info Lon sir!

Got mine today. Works great for no more than I got to play with it. Talked to three people and all said loud and clear. Will give an update after I mess with it some more.

I think they make one that has a control on top. They have the same specs. I dont know if its a tone or gain control. The wife talked to me on the way to work and all I can say is WOW!!! It sounds perfect. Not over bassy or tinny. Sounds like me only loud and clear. I think i will buy a spare. The company I work for makes the plastic used in these mics. If your needing a mic you cant go wrong with this one.

The mic you are thinking of Dale is a AST-878 DMRR. It has the gain control on top and a small light on top. Same spec as this mic we are talking about.

This mic is basically a redesign of the astatic 1104c desk mic which had sliding volume controls on the base of the mic next to the ptt switch. The 1104c was a great sounding mic, but was known to get scratchy sounding due to dust getting in the slide controls. I'm glad to see this mic back on the market again, along with having the volume control underneath the mic.

OK, after using this mic for a few weeks with my Magnum S9, everyone I spoke with said it sounded HUGE. When I used with my Galaxy 95T, it was almost overbearing no matter what the setting. It is easy to over-modulate, so you need to take the time to balance the radio's mic gain with the desk mic's gain underneath the unit (obviously).

When using with my 95T I have mic set at about 2/3 of the way up and radio afuzz above half way on am and a fuzz below half for SSB. Sounds Great!

I have had to turn it down a fuzz. I got a different box. Get a bud you trust to help you get it set digger. Have bottom of mic and radio at about half. I have heard it and it sounds great like this.

Mr. Clean,
Great and thanks for the info. I'm finding that the radio's mic gain is the real driver and the power mic does not need to be pushed very much as you state above.

Have you had any luck getting it better matched to the 95T? I have a pretty mild tune on mine trying to stay out of my neighbors stuff. 10 to 35 watt DK 140 pep. running it in front of a Wizard box and it sounds real nice with the 878. If having trouble matching it to the 95 you might try turning down the mod afuzz on the internal adjustment. No mic I guess works great on all radios but this works great with my 95. Peace

My experience was with SSB only. I'm sure if I backed down the mod. internally I could better control. But for now, sounds very good.
