Fellow Forum Members :I have been e-mailed by a few of you asking why I do not talk SSB.Some twenty years ago I gave it a try and after about a month I realized it wasn't for me.Sidebanders for the norm are a different breed of radioman. They like using Q-code.If they own a radio that drifts from 27.105 to 27.106 they get major upset. They really get upset if a straight channel operator bleeds over on them. They are generally perfectionest or want to be.Now I have a good many friends who talk SSB and that's fine with me,but if you want to talk to me talk straight channels.73 |

This has been a major beef of mine, why the samhill would anyone use Q-code verbaly? That's why they call it code. It's used to convey many words in 3 letters while using continuous wave. You can say it faster using phone or as fast and using Q-code just shows ignorance, thus endeth the lesson. |

Well I have to say, it's true. I prefer SSB. I have no trouble with someone being off freq. I can tune in just about anyone, or a few anyones. I love the SSB. No don't get me wrong. It took a little time to learn how to use SSB. And I do run AM. Every night the locals talk reg 40, on AM. But SSB holds a special place in my heart. My Grandfather was a Ham. He loved it, and would always try and get me to get a ticket. Now that he is gone, I wish I had. But it just didn't hold the same feeling as CB. But SSB was something he could relate to. So it was common ground for us. A place we both loved to talk on. And I have meet some real nice people there. And it's where I have made the best contacts. But I am not one to shy away from AM, or FM. I love all modes when it comes to 11 meters. I'll do whatever it takes to make the other person I am talking to happy. AM, SSB, FM! I do it all, and it's all good to me! *G* So there it is, my opinion on the topic, and maybe a little insight into the history of SODA POP. Don't worry class, there will be no test on today's topic! *G* Take care all. |

Hey guys to each his own I say. This is a big world and there's room for everyone's favorite mode.I started AM 12 years ago but was intrigued by SSB.Talked to father-in-law for 9 years on it. He moved 90 miles straight north so I made a 75 amp power supply and added a boot.He says I sound like I'm in his driveway, but his boot is to small and I can't copy him.I was going to get him a KLV 550 for christmas, but my wife needed this computer,so it go's. |

Well guys, I hardly ever use the AM mode any more, because all my buddies run SB. It is mostly truckers in this area on AM. AM is so broad banded that percise tuning is not required and a drifting radio or one that is off enough to affect SB, presents no tuning problems for the AM user. Many don't use SB, even if they have a SB radio, because of short comming in there radios. Possibly unknow to many operators, most factory CB and export type radios do not TX exactly where they RX and that causes a problem tuning and using SB. If your radio was right you might change your minds a bit. Vern, you are right about the jerks that use Q-codes on SB, I guess it makes them feel a little more like a real Ham operator. Come on Good Buddy, is it possible that you AM'ers never have a jerk that uses CB lingo on the AM side in your area, 10-4 mercy sakes, I'm wave'n a hand. You probably talk how you talk and where you talk because you have bud’s out there that have similar interest and act similar. That is not unusual. Many radios are still made without SB so those guys are limited to what they can work anyway. In fact, some may not even know what SB is. Hey guys, the world is full of jerks and they are not all on SB. But remember there are some advantages to using the SB mode. Marconi |

I shoot skip, I mean I shoot skip I don!t care in what mode. If Icould talk to the UK on AM I would, but that has not been the case. All the old timers have changed to SSb because they say it is the best mode of signal, besides CW so that what I went with. It wasn!t hard to prove their point when I was a mud-duck because I got to talk to people with little or no power. All I had was 15ft of beam and it took me around the world. That was good enough for me as far as the test went. I am not interested in talking in the U.S of A done that. I am intersted contacting those stations that I have not heard before. Most of the QRM that takes place happens here stateside, with people trying to tell you this that an another. I respect persons opinion, but if it is good enough for the hams it is good enough for me. Hey alot of people are satisfied with AM because they are satisfied with the Hams old junk. And that is what they call it when they are talking on their so-called private ch. 80 or 75 Meters. That the way they describ it on the way to the swap meet.(smile) I am not I the market for other people junk, so I don!t have any world famous AM radios. You would be hard pressed to fine a radio, a real Ham rig that doesn!t have SSb and not talking about moble radios. I am talking about the $2,ooo range that doesn!t come with SSB. There is a reason for that, it being that those people that really want to shoot skip that is the mode they are going to use. Whether it be in the middle on the nite or daytime. It is a fact there are only two efficient signals one is CW and the other is SSB. It is called getting the biggest bang for the buck. Seeing that I don!t alot of money to spend on this hobby I will go with the bang. I am not going to sit in front on my better half and talk to myself. OK, I am thru ranting for this month, everyone have a good year DXing SSB2103 |

2103 i was a member of SPAM (the socity to perserve AM ) i love the mode and use it every chance i get on 10 meters. SSB is am ... HELLO AGAIN SSB IS AM ... only using one sidaband and supressing the carier. THE reason SSB took off is it is a good weak signal mode about 9 db better tham AM but explain why FM is so widely used if everyone wants range WELL like SSB fm has a wonderful abilty to kill noise but is no better than am as a week signal mode when you drop out of limiting SEE ya. As for " HAMS OLD JUNK" have you ever heard a old collins or johnson on the hf bands running AM a sweet sound broadcast sounding just because so many CBers bucher up a good radio dont blame am for that any time you if you are a ham would like to hook up im game on am 29.03 or fm 29.6 let me know. bruce |
