I would like to know what it takes to get started modifying radios? I'm not talking about commercially, but as a hobby. This stuff really intrigues me and I can't stand crappy sounding radios so I'd like to get an idea of how to get on the right track! Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Buy and read "Understanding and Repairing CB Radios" by Lou Franklin to start...

The CB Modification books listed on this site will give you good info on different radios. Plus coppers sells the meters and dummy loads you will need to do the work.Learning a little RF Theory will help also. As far as fines go ? I don`t think the cb police are really into hunting cobra 29 users for being to loud,,lol.

A little advice from an ol timer, untill you are very experienced, stick with the solid state jobs, don't put your hands in any tube type radios or amplifiers. They will bite, I, like everyone that has messed with the tube types have been bit, but about a year ago, mine was much more that a bite. By a little careless act on my part, and 1200 volts DC in a place it shouldn't have been, I'm luck not to be pushing up daisys. It 'hung' my right hand, the left hand was grounded, the current knocked me down, but not loose, I could not get loose, a couple of guys happened to be with me, and one of them was smart enought to knock me loose. My right hand was burned so bad, it took 4 months to heal, and the index finger will never be the same, I had a hundred blisters in my left hand. This wasn't some dummy poking around where he didn't know what he was doing, I have worked on amplifiers 30 years, and carried a master electrican card for longer, worked on all kind of high voltage, 3 phase, industrial panels, anything to do with AC, and never an accident, but it just takes one time to get you. Like driving down a two way highway, your just 3 feet from death, in those high voltage amps, just 1 inch sometime. Scrap

i like the little 100 watt mobile amps on a small power supply. 100 watts is the first big jump from 5 watts. like the palomar 80 or 150. you can run them for ever and tear everything up. if you blow it, throw it in the trash and get anotherone.

taz, 73's and im out
