When I need to fix my washer or dryer I check out this site for troubleshooting information:

http://www.repairclinic.com/

I've found it extremely helpful and it's taught me how to open them up to get to what I need to get to. Just a few months ago I replaced the rollers for the drum in my dryer and this site saved me lots of time.

Allagator,
I can relate. About ten years ago, I decided to save money and replace a broken belt on a washing machine. I did not know it's original routing thru the maze of parts and after four nights of standing on my head (after work) with mounds of laundry piling up (three small kids) and an extremly hostile wife, I gave up and called the repairman. He said that I nearly had it, and it only took him about ten minutes to finish. The price was the SAME as if I had not touched it. I'll work on the cars, do carpentry work, etc., but I will NEVER work on an appliance again.

man, i can relate to this one:

the house im in now had the washer and dryer in it when we moved in.
we thought, "let's save some money and just use these instead of buying new ones."

oh man!!!

the washer would dump a load full of water on the floor if it got out of balance, which happened a lot until i found out that there were no front feet on the thing. two pieces of 3/4 ply later- it never happened again.
smae washer, when switched to large load, would not shut off and would flood the laundry room. (happened twice). two new switches at $30.00 each.
washer works like brand new. looks like last owners thought it was broke and nver used it.
dryer would take three hours to dry clothes. and then only did a marginal job.
too the whole thing apart and cleaned every last bit of lint out of it even reached back into the wall to pull out any excess. no improvement.
after three more days of this, (and many dirty looks from the YL), i had a brainstorm!
went up to the roof to check dryer vent. YEP!!!
it was so clogged with lint that i had to reach my whole arm down into the vent to clear it all out.
dryer works like brand new. did a lot of learning on this one.
MORAL: if your dryer doesnt dry; go to the roof!
matt

Allagator, I think WE ALL can relate to that. I won't even go into the this one. It would take me several days to post all the stuff I've gotten into and wished I hadn't.
