Well..was savin for an amp but I COULDN'T pass on a deal like this...so far..lovin it. Not seeing the advertised 40+watts yet on an external meter but a nice swing over 30. The radios meter certainly shows 45+ but seems generous for sure. On to saving for the "4 PILL" now. I remember reading Sam L's warning with using a 2 pill amp like my Palomar 225 but I don't see the harm if I turn down the RF power it'll do what my Galaxy did...or so it seems? One thing that surprised me (as per radio checks)was that it sounds just as loud with the stock mic as nearly ANY power mic I try? Hmmmmm...cool. Hank (WHERE'S THE SKIP NOW!?) CEF559 |

YES!! A little tweaking inside by just turning a few pot's will get you that swing unless your meter is just really crappy. I see it on mine, and it's a Coaxial Dynamics... |

My new Omega Force S-45 will swing 40 watts easy. BTW, if you don't use top gun and turn down the watts you should be able to get some use out of the radio with a two pill. One tech did tell me to avoid the 1446's, go with 2290's. Mikefromms |

Mikefromms...yea.. I played a little last night. I can turn down the VR power to 2w swing 20 and do the same bit on the Palomar as my Galaxy does. However I did also experiment with the modulator "on" and turned down the dk to 2w swing the whole 30+w range. With the palomar on LOW it DK's 30 and swings to 100+...on MED power it'll DK 50 and swing to 125+. AMP not even getting warm...didn't feel comfortable enough to try HI power... either way right now it still about the input as the Galaxy when working SSB. I don't see the harm? I'm told I sound great and clean and don't "Think" I'm overdriving the amp? BTW this palomar has 2 MFR 455's so I do realize I'm probably at the threshold when its on MED power. Any more suggestions? Warnings? What amps are "all y'all" running with the Magnum top gun radios? BTW...interesting thing on the S9..ever notice that if you SLOWLY turn the channel dial between (or just past center)two different channels then bounce back to where you were..it'll change channel in that direction anyway? You could (if you wanted) go through the whole 40 this way. Wonder why Magnum didn't just put a rebound (turn-release) type knob if that was the case? Another thing I was wondering......why on the mangum S9 advertisment do they show a pic of the radio on ch 45? How was that done? I didn't notice that option in the programming guide for idiots? AS for the wattage issue (30+PEP)...I was going to go in and turn up VR13 for high power to get the 45w but doubt I'd see enough of a difference in range anyway..I'll TRY to keep my power hungry fingers out of this rig and let her run "cool"....why push it? Right? Hank 'S-905 |

texas star dx500-4 pill. OR davemade, xforce, fatboy 5 pill & see 50-100 more watts dead key(safely) & 300+ more watts swing. not much price difference. turning up vr13 will only get you HIGHER DEAD KEY-no more swing. don't go much past 11 watts, it's stressing the finals then. you'll have to tweak vr16 & 13 at the same time to keep dead key low at 2 or under & dead key high close to 11. vr14 for AM & vr12 for SSB swing, again tweak 'em carefully or you'll make the audio crunchier then it already is from topgun. out of the box my radio only swung to 15 or 16 watts, vr12 & 14 were set REAL LOW! it swings to 40-41 AM 38-40 SSB now, TOPS is about 43 & it sounds HORRIBLE. backing off that tiny bit makes it sound totally different. |

Hey there Hank! Careful what you do. My Connex at 30 watt swing mic gain at 12 0 clock smoked 2sc2879 X 2 in A Cobra 350xl amp. I thought everything was OK until the amp stopped getting hot like before. lol I'm waiting on my 4 pill Texas Star now. Since your in the market I'll keep you posted on its performance. |

Thanks for the input here...the S-9 has made it to the mobile (to be closer to me ). REaching out there just fine thankyou. I hear you Pat...think I'll leave well enough alone for now and keep her cool with a maximum life term......for now. I got my Dosy back and see a near 40w swing...close enough and it stays room temp. I'll try to be smart. Hotwire...keep me updated on yer findings. Certainly want a little kick in that mobile. BTW...get yer QSL from me yet? Hank '905 CEF 559 |

I have the S45 Omega Force with a 650 w Palomar. I put my power to 3 on the knob. I have my mic gain to 12 oclock. I just use the power switch on AMP to control out put. I did ask the tech when I got AMP. (I'm brain dead when it comes to the techno side)That whether it was 4 pill. He said just watch that I don't crank the power up on AM side. I can run full power on SSB. I however to be safe and not blow anything will keep my power at 3-4 watts. and my Mic Gain down. I didn't receive any doc on amp, all the stuff I learned came form this forum. I would like to get a WAtt Meter that can take punshiment from being over the road. truckerdon is just going to have to get a LOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGG extension cord so he can plug that klv1000P into the wall. remember to use a heavier extension cord for those longer runs & don't get it caught in any of those wheels, it'll wind up & pull out of the wall real quick! |
