Hey guys as most of you all know I own a 94 Bronco and have my first son coming! So what I was thinking today was, since I always wanted to fix up the Bronco (REALY FIX IT UP) I thought that maybe I would go out and get a little Honda or something to be my daily driver and I could slowly fix up the truck, you know re-do the interior, performance stuff EVERYTHING! And in the mean time my son will be growing and growing and hopefully find interest and begin helping me out and then I'll surprise him on his 16th b-day!!! And give him the truck, by which time it should be KILLER! They stopped making Broncos in 1996, mine is the last body style (1994) and in pretty good shape, with 110000 miles now. I am guessing that by the time he turns 16 it will be 25 y/o or so and approaching classic status. Already in the last year that I have had it has gone up about $500.00 in value according to KBB.com. I guess my question is, does this sound feasible? Am I attempting to revive a dead horse (PUN INTENDED) Do you think he'll appreciate it? Is it gonna be too much truck for a 16 y/o? When I am all done and it is 25 y/o do you think it’s gonna be worthless? Do you think it will be a "classic" like a Mustang or 69 camero, GTO etc or even in the ball park? What do y'all think? BC

Well Bc, As a father of 4 boys, only time will tell. I think it's a wonderful gesture and a thought that probably goes through every first dad's mind. With the changing body styles and the way vehicles are heading nowadays, there is no telling where we will be in 16 or so years. I would def fix up the truck, use it, and enjoy it myself for now. Getting a Honda or similar car to drive so you can tear down the Bronco and work on it is a good idea, heck, the kid might want the Honda when its all said and done. As for it being a classic, who knows, I certianly don't see it becoming one but who knows. As for it being worthless, if you put all your hard work, time and effort into it, it will never be worthless, to you anyway. It will always be a true gem in your eyes, and that's all that matters. With a few "tricks" and Mod's, (kinda like a radio) it could be a true performer and eye catcher as well. Have fun with it, do what you want to it, and enjoy it for yourself for now. If your son grows up and is into it, great. But remember, your son will be an individual with his own mind and his own way of thinking. He will like what he likes, and that will change daily as he grows. |

I think your heart is in the right place. But, as each person has different tastes. He may like it or he may not. I think as he grows older, your be able to tell more of your sons likes and dislikes. Whether or not it will be a classic someday i don't know. Sometimes it pays for a 16 yr old to drive a beater car first until he gains some responsibility for driving. I know that was true for me...LOL... My son is 15 now and will turn 16 on Dec 16th. Some of his likes and dislikes are different then mine. So, only your son can answer your question in the future. Either way your have a nice Bronco for him to use or for you to use or a vehicle that will probably be worth a good amount of money. Take one day at a time...LOL... |

BC910, If you expect a vehicle may go to classic status you will kill the value when you "fix it up". Best thing would be to put it up and it will be much more valuable. Then when your son is older you can sell it to help pay for his college education. |

When your son is sixteen, we may all be using the "Flying cars" like the Jetson's cartoon series. But for nostalgic purposes, why not?. Besides, by that time the government may have found or discovered an alternative fuel source, rendering any vehicles burning fossil (Dinosaur) fuel obsolete. Wolverine. |

BC, from my viewpoint: Rule # 1: ALWAYS keep THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILDREN in your mind FIRST when handing them their own transportation. I did this with all 3 of mine and it has paid off! The old philosophy of give them an old heavy car just does not hold water from my viewpoint anymore. Provide them with a vehicle that has safety features such as Air Bags and Anti Lock brakes and seatbelts. Stick to your guns on this next one: no license until Drivers Education at school is complete. Not one of the 30 day driving classes, but regular full semester of class at school. There are NO substitutions. As a parent with 3 now grown, I would shudder when I got a call when on the road traveling and wonder if they are calling to say "Dad, I just had a wreck". You do the best you can, but still trust them. By the way, a couple of rules that are gold: 1st 30 days of driving on your own after getting regular license means - NO radio of any kind can be played at all. No cell phone conversations at all other than to call home from a sitting position to say Mom or Dad, I am on the way home. These two rules are gold. Remember, once on their own, there is no parent in car to help them make the driving decision. Did not mean to get on soapbox, but hope this will help. You want to know what will really happen if you go the fix up route? You will like it so much, hey son, go get your own car, this baby is Mine! Ha! Good luck with the project. Keith in Atlanta |

If you start it now, while original parts are still available, you can scour the junkyards for anything you may need in the future, and save yourself a few bucks. It sounds like a great father-son thing! Rich |

Will he be able to afford the gas prices 16 years from now? Arent' Broncos are pretty thirsty critters? Incidentally, I liked how you spelled Camero. That was actually the original spelling and appeared in some early promotional literature, but they changed it to Camaro. Why I don't remember. A cousin of mine owned one of the rare '67 Z/28s. Beautiful car. SHE took outstanding care of it. |

Keith, I drive what i call a beater car. It has all the safety features and it is in excellent shape body and motor wise. It's just not a new car. (1994) Yeah, don't buy your kids a piece of junk thats falling apart. I'm guessing that gas cars may be obsolete anyway in 16 years the way things are going. But,who knows...LOL... Anyhow, what i did was i saved money over the past 15 years for him to buy whatever car his heart desired at 16. As long as like Keith said, it was safe. I have about $18,000 saved for him.

From a different angle. I recently bought a Honda Civic Si, it's quick, really quick for a four banger without forced induction. It also gets rave reviews for safety and reliability. I shopped for a long time but always went back to this, again for safety. I feel much safer strapping my son in this than the drag truck. Get something safe now, there's nuts out there, let him live to see 16 then make the decision on the Bronco. You will always have a kick a** truck. Wait a while before rebuilding. My son LOVES to help me work on mine and yes maybe someday he can be a proud driver and share the rod with dad. At least he can say he's been working on it since he was 4. Not many can say that Kids love the feeling of accomplishment and I'm proud of the fact that I have a young one that can turn a wrench like a man not play video games like a pro. Chad |

That Bronco may seem like an unlikey candidate for a future collectable BUT if my Dad had saved me a '66 Bronco in like new condition I'd be thanking him till the day I needed a part that was no longer available! I say go for it...as a lover of older cars I already have my Kids (Girls 10 and 8..son 5) claiming "dibs" on my GTO's...of course they all want the one that runs and has the "Wing" on the trunk. Stock piling parts is a great idea..especially electronics such as an ECM and a few of the engine managment controllers. Body parts will always be around...you'll see! Its the glass and small stuff nobody will reproduce~ Wanna talk about it!? BEEN THERE! The hard part will be to have that rig sitting around the next 16 years without losing interest! Keep up the good work and walk away when you get tired...don't burn yourself out on it and it'll get done...BTW Congrats on your first born on the way...here's another "on topic" suggestion. Run out and buy that rig a new CB NOW so it'll be vintage "PERIOD Correct" and still NEW when he takes it over...cool! Searching for a NICE early 70's CB for my Goat as we speak. Found a brand new in package trunk mount ant at a thrift store dated for '73...cost $5! Cool to hunt/find old stuff packed away but even cooler to have someone hand it to you! Best of luck~!! my wife says our 13 year old can have her '02 competition yellow monte carlo-but I want it!. he wants my '86 blazer with 1 ton axles & 44's-if it don't rot out 1st. he's driven it on the beach...not sure i'd let him drive it on the road though. hondas are not piles of sand. keep the bronco goin' bc. as he gets older, see what he's into & change your plans from there. my 9 year old wants me to get a woodie PT cruiser, or even a real wood-woodie. & i was almost ready to do another v-8 vega. got rid of that baby just in time. phew. then they leveled the dragstrip. |

Fixing up the Bronco for the new Son? Sounds like the dilema I once had - buy Vicky a new fishing rod or a side by side shotgun. I got her both, and she left me anyway! Go figure. She came back, so I got her golf clubs. |

I have 2 boys,10 and 5. They both want my 87 Ranger. 6 in lift 38's and barely street legal. I am not a ford fan but I couldnt pass the deal up on it. Sad part is I also have a 69 Le Sabre that is street/strip that I put alot of blood sweat and tears in. They dont even bat an eye at it unless I'm at the strip playing around. Kids can be unusual characters . By the time he is 16 he might have another project vehicle or just another vehicle in mind. I say do what you want to it and see what happens |

cool car vanillagorilla. bc910 thats a fine guesture one thing though when i was 16 i never took care of a vehicle. u think your son will .maybe he will who knows. my opion is keep it and your whole family can go 2 carshows with it as a family day.im a advid carshow goer ive seen lots of 4x4 vehicles fixed up in them and i dont think they will have a popularity like a 69camaro but theres a place for every vehicle in a carshow. |
