Why is it on channel 19...when you ask for a radio check ( to really know if your rig / antenna is working correctly ) you always wind up with some WISE APPLE who tells you "it works" or "I hear ya"... or some other smart remark one liner.

What happened to folks who really gave a hoot about helping others...or is it "dog eat dog" these days ?

Back in the 20th century, folks would HELP each other with their rigs, desk mikes, etc...now it seems to be all gone ! ?

Its pretty much gone on 19 especially. There are still a few that will give a good check though. Locals are more likely to tell you exactly what your rig sounds like. Just my experience.

Don't forget this one;
I accept cash only, no checks.

Most of the time that is all the Driver wants to know. Is my radio working? When I would pull out after a long break or weekend off (ya, right) one of the first things to do was a radio check. It's working. Good. I probably already know it sounds OK or at least good enough to be understood. I lived with that thing on the better part of 15 hours a day. I knew where all of the knobs and switches should be because I had asked another Driver in the past how I sounded and made the adjustments needed and remembered the settings. So if you need more than "it's working" just ask. Keep in mind that a Driver running 70 while grossing 79,800 lbs. has other things on his or her mind like watching out for suicidal 4-wheelers. They may not be able to watch the signal meter or be able to see it well enough to give you a good S-Meter reading.

Can I get a radio check?
Checks in the mail.
Good. It's working.

We still do render equipement checks. But as Alleycat explained it rarely happens that you'll get much of a check on AM 27.185.0 MHz, although I sometimes think it's better not to ask for an equipement check on AM , because a lot of people will think you're just looking for someone to talk to.

Most drivers don't care if the fidelity is there, they are only there for communication. You asked if it works and they will let you know. I always do checks with the locals, a couple even have different radios and will switch around for you, the locals are mostly AM here but some will hook up another radio they rarely use to check SSB performance, At that time it becomes a 2 sided radio check :-)

I will also check with another radio close by on the property with a compromised receive antenna and a set of headphones. I rarely do a radio check, if I have good looking meters then I trust it. I check it maybe once a month or two to make sure my audio is not THAT far off.

A "radio check" or "radio report" is the same no matter what frequency or channel or band or mode you are using.

Sorry, but I have just never assumed that any person who asked for a Radio Check or Radio Report on any band or mode was looking for someone to talk to.

Hey I always liked the response,
"Yea, I got mine."
Yes, I belice that people need a sense of humor to deal w/ life's idiots.
However, you want me to take some time to give you a really good ant., mic, whatever check(cash, money order) I have never had a prob. doing so, And if my audio does start sounding poorly one of the locals is more than happy to let me know, and help me correct it untill it sounds like the " SHOTGUN MOBILE" that they all know and "LOVE"???

I bet you I here about 20 diferent people a day ask for a check. I live near 4 truckstops on I 65. I'm not a driver but I will always give more than its working to a driver if asked. Most of them really are just to make sure it works but a few really are trying to make some adjustments. Also lots of times I cant trust anyone to be honest on the road or any locals for that matter. Besides the seasoned operators on LSB 38 who know me I dont bother. Usually I will get my dad or brother who have been around radios enough to know them give me a check on the base and then I listen to it on the base while they go out and visa versa. Just my opinion when asking a stranger for a check whos to say anybody knows what their listening for anyway? I have heard drivers give good checks and the thing sounded terrible and if I try to intervene and say likewise , wooo look out, now I'm the guy who dont know what hes talkin about. People are just not as nice as they used to be. All you can do is keep on keepin on.

I have to admit when someone hollars for a radio check I tell them "your checks in the mail" LOL because they all know that I am the local mail lady.. then I let them know how many pounds I have on them and how their modulation sounds..

What happened to the old meter and dummy load radio check? I know several people that always
ask for a radio check every time they get on the
air. It gets old pretty annoying very quick. I can see it if you are a big rig, but if you are at home or in personal vehicle you can check it at home. Buy a good set of meters and a dummy load and do it yourself, instead of someone else
doing it for you. What would it be like if every-one ask for a radio check, it would be pandimonium.
I personally won't give one unless I know it is a trucker, because it gets run in the ground here where I live. My two cents worth.

Semper Fi!!!

One thing to remember is useing good meter/s.
with that in mind if all looks good belive me if your radio don't sound good at all you won't have to wait for a radio check/report to know,
Others will let you know fast enough.
Just my 2 cents and I want change LOL :-)

Come on now, if you ask for a simple radio check that is all you are going to get. If you want more you simply have to ask. You cannot expect people be be able to read your mind and 99% of the time all folks want to know is that it is working anyway.
Also if someone is using a radio check to start a conversation (and yes it does happen on a rare occasion) if you have time and are in the mood to talk invite them to another channel and talk, if not simply don't talk. They will figure it out pretty quick. Radio is all about talking after all.

Maybe I am an oprimist -or maybe there are differences in the way people act by geographical area?

I live about 2 mi from a area huge TA and several other smaller truck stops. I don't gear any real negative radio traffic, or radio trash on a daily basis. Nope, not even the radio checkers. I bet I hear less than two a day.

What I hear are truckers asking for directions to warehouses, truck washes, and places that they have scheduled for delivery. Infrequent questions about the daily fare on the TA's buffet.

Guys trying to get a tire repair taken care of, things like that.

At night, they talk a lot of personal stuff, sitting in their cabs relaxing.

Nope, in this part of Texas the CB is pretty well employed. There seems to be plenty of opportunitiy to talk wothout "radio checking".

Curse Words, now once in a while we do hear some "Yankee Language" down here as well, not that often and usually some trucker will belittle them for doing it. I have never heard any on channels other than 19 either.

I guess that -every once and a while, a Northern truck or an Eastern truck, makes it past Austin! LOL....

The one good thing is that, no matter where they are from, they are mobile, and are gone in a few minutes.

I got a kick out of that one. The 'radio checker' didn't come back anymore, either! :-)

Hollowpoint445: Actually, I think that ("Yankee Language")is a dictionary definition! LOL

"Yankee", BTW, is anyone that lives North of Austin or East of Houston.

"@#$%#" is everybody else West of El Paso and North of Amarilo.

Yeah we get lots of curse words around Indy on the radio. Never heard of yankee language before. Did'nt realize the term yankee still meant anything either. Why stereotype a region of the country? I'm sure southerners use bad langauge too.

I live near I-35 and I-40 junction now and all you'll get on 19 is the standard "it's werkin" lol
I used to do my CB'ing in the boonies where giving and getting a radio check would take 5 minutes or more. Squinting at the S meter to determin if the other guy was swinging 3 or 3 1/2 S-units of forward modulation. dialing in mic gain, center freq, which mic sounds better.. ahhhh I miss them days. :-)

Except our cooking. Face it, Yankees would never think of cooking a snake if they didn't see it in a Western movie, first.

Snakes, Gators, Monkey -yes sir, we have eaten them.

The first time I ever ate a snake, was in Cumberland, Md. Gator, well I lived in the Everglades.

I was born in Virginia but went to school at Chicago, U-NY Albany, Boston University, Boston College, Princeton, and B.U. at Naples Italy.

All Yankee schools, where I never met man who was a Bass Fisherman or knew what "grits" were.
