Yesterday I could not spell it and today I are one.

I followed the suggestion that Tech 808 has on taking practice tests every day and memorizing the correct answers to the questions that I had (and still have) no idea what is being talked about. The VE at the testing center agreed with this method and said that the first thing is to PASS THE TEST and later you can learn why the answers are what they are with practical experience and more study. I recognized most the the questions on the real test from the practice tests. The test seemed easier than the practice tests. The whole thing was realy quite relaxed and the people giving the test were very nice. I took the test at the TN Tech Center in Hohenwald, TN. They are listed on the ARRL web site.

I got 34 out of 35 correct. The one I missed had to do with the frequency split on FM repeater. I get them mixed up between the bands. I did not take the code test.

One young guy (17 y.o.?) failed the Tech. test. He did not realy look like he wanted to be there. It looked like he was there for Grandpa who was sitting in the back of the room. He was quietly taken out back behind the school and received one round of 9MM to the back of the head. Quite painless I'm sure. Grandpa wept quietly and paid for the round of ammo.
So what do you have to loose? GO FOR IT.

Now I have to save for something to talk on on the 6 Meter band but for now I'll just keep DXing on 38 LSB. My Call Sign should be posted on the FCC web sight on Friday.

just catching up on posts i missed while vacationing, alleycat. i wanna see more copper CBers get their tech ticket & get on 6 meters. i still love dxing on cb, but check my post under dx contacts>>6 & 11 meters skip, that i posted yesterday. i'd made about 10 dx contacts on 6 before yesterday. now that spring/early summer conditions are here, i hope to do that more frequently. the largest $$ outlay was for an rci5054dx100. i actually put a used road devil mic on it-at the suggestion of a local who said it needed a bit more punch. ALL comments on audio are that it sounds GREAT. my antenna cost me $19 for a tripod from radio shack. i had the mast & coax, & made the antenna from a piece of aluminum tubing i had laying around & followed instructions/notes i found in books such as-'6 meters, a guide to the magic band', ' the arrl antenna compendium', amongst others & the internet. there is also a gentleman, who makes an antenna, already tuned for 50-50.3 mhz-the SSB segment. it is a square loop, 30" x 30", horizontal polarity & it talks like a DREAM. the mast & tripod stand out on my roof, yet you don't realize there is anything up top! & it sure gets out, local & dx!
congrats & good luck on 6 meters alleycat!
COME ON NOW GUYS!!! WHO'S NEXT?

The Big Brown Truck delivered my new RCI 5054DX-100 today and when I got home the FCC had posted my Call Sign today also. The radio is a gift from my better half for passing the test. I have caught her taking practice tests herself so I might have to share. I hope she will stick with it and get her license. She has had some bad experiences on CB. We all know what happens when a womans voice goes out on 19. I have tried to get her to try some DXing on 38 LSB but as far as she is concerned it is still CB. The two times that I have heard women on 38 LSB they were attacked by the lude, rude and crude. I think she will be listening when I am on 6 Meters and judging Ham for herself.
So in the morning I will be getting my homebrew dipole antenna up and see what happens. Hooked the 5054DX up to the dipole I use for CB just to listen but did not hear anything at all. Now I have to go and sign up with the CEF radio group.

Thanks all for the congratulations.

Its terrible but true that a womans voice on the radio causes so much trouble. Not on the ham bands I hope! There are alot of women drivers that are alomost as bad but is a low %. Peolpes true self comes out when hidden behind a mic. They would never say such things to their face!
