Here in Indiana last night 4-11-05 the DX was amazing. I was having 15 and 30 minute long QSOs and making contacts with almost every corner of the country with 3 4 and 5 different contacts at once in my MOBILE!! At only 100 watts some could of swore I had 1000. Its like mother nature all of the sudden opened a window. Everybody was at least 10 over. Any body else expierence this? Its been at least a year since that good of conditions. |

Yea, I did, I turned off my amp and could talk to washington state and colorado with only 2.5 swinging 4 watts, that is a first for me to talk dx barefoot. almost all the channels were full of dx AM and SSB. I was getting between 6-9 on signal from everyone and I too had long QSOs. lots af traffic jams out there last evening but I loved it cause it`s been to quiet here lately. AP |

Brewdirect What channel do they use Down Under? I see that you use the Magnum 257, I will get mine back from the "tune up" next week, and I am eager to get it set up. What mic do you use with it? |

I run 38 LSB usually... My older magnum 257 has a Astatic D104M6B on it. I did the swing modification to boost my AM modulation and it helped on SSB too. I did various tests with different mikes vs. each other and the stock mike (after turning up the internal volume pot on the mic). The Roadnoise echo mike and the D104 were the best at getting extra swing out of the radio. The D104 edged out the roadnoise slightly. The stock mike came in third, and last was the cobra power mike (totally worthless for any radio in my opinion). I do love the Magnum 257 on SSB...AM was lacking for Audio even with the power mike until I did the modification. |

808: Look at that (Brewdirect), encouraging huh, for us 257 owners. Lon, Were you running barefoot? Those contacts are impressive. I once talked from Midway Island to Scotland 2716KHZ 30W USB on a URC-35 and a 35ft whip with coupler back in the middle 70s. Tuning / modulation were acomplished with a spectrum analyser. I was calling Honolulu Harbor, from the Midway Harbor Control (Nothing else to do on a Sunday Day watch) and the Port Officer at Holylock Scotland answered the call. You gotta love a day like that. |

My Magnum 257 is loud with the Superstar DM-452. I turned watts on am up to 10 watts and then adjusted modulation for peaks at just over 100%. Amazing radio. BTW, I want to get a DM-452 for all my radios. mikefromms |

Mike: Is that the same as the Aries DM-104 that Lon suggested? I don't have it wired for the Magnum 257 yet. I got good reports on my Uniden 810E with it. |

I was hoping I wasnt the only one. I bet you guys in Cali make QSOs to Australia often. I can hear Australia now and then but only the guys with beams seem to make contact here in Indiana. Always wanted to be near the ocean to work 11 meter skip someday. Yo Redwolf!!! Never heard of that club. Are they in Indiana? What does B.W. stand for?

I'm looking forward to getting back on HF. I just purchased a Kenwood TS-140s and it is being shipped now, and I have a brand new I-Max 2000 That will be on a 24' mast with brand new coax. I'm now shopping for a 20 amp power supply. I'm gonna have a antenna raising party in 2 weeks, and I'm so excited. Ya'll be hearing more from me here on the forum now. 73 Bob CEF#524 |

Knottyboy: Are there any voice freqs in the HF band? I miss having the wide choice.hen I was in the Navy -you could follow the propogation and talk any time of day to almost anywhere. Of course, with a list of freqs that was never ending -it was a little easier. Ahhhh, the good old days!

When I told a friend..."Naa..barefoot is fine for me" he said..you'll eat those words..I know you. Well , Pass the hot sauce please. Hank "905" CEF 559 |

Hey VanillaGorilla! What kind of amp dp you have in mind? I have a few cheapys that I must admit are awsome but almost saved up enough dough for the Texas Star 667 and V Mod for my base. Although I have been studying a KLV base amp.hhmmmmm decisions. I have 2 60 amp power supplys that need use so I"m leanimg towards Texas Star. Those are tough words to eat. Better break out the A-1 too. |
