Why doesn't this forum have an FAQ? It seems that quite a bit of the traffic here is the same question over and over again. An FAQ could answer these basic questions. Call it "CB for Beginners" and post answers to basic questions.

I think the moderators have been using the search function for this. Good idea though racer.

Good question.
I've seen this on other boards too. Same question asked over and over. Takes up alot of server space. A Knolwedge Base Area would be nice. A guest or member could access this area if he/she has a question and look for the answer there. If he/shes does not find the answer they are lookin for, then they could post it in the appropiate forum. Not a bad idea if you ask me.

Racer:

That comes under "They Ought'a" -LOL

I mean, the Techs are already well occupied and that is an awful lot of work you are suggesting.

Also, I think that, that would change the dynamic atmosphere of the platform. I am sure that we get a lot of the same answers, along with a lot of useful user input as well. The post have headlines -it allows us to choose what post we want to read.

I actually looked through the product reviews and information available on the Magnum 257 this week, and I found a few areas where I still had questions. I would hate to feel like the "question police" were watching every post I made.

Redundant input could be a good thing.

How many users would suggest a funcion on the Magnum 257, for example, to tune in 5K increments, before it became a modification?

Now that would be a good thing.

What got me thinking about it is the current thread about trimming coax. Frankly I can't bring myself to post more than I already have on the subject even though it deserves more. I suppose I could copy/paste what I have already posted on other threads.

FAQs are quite useful for the simple questions. The more complicated or specific stuff would still be discussed. Questions that are covered by the FAQ could just be referred to the FAQ.

I thought that we could start threads discussing what the FAQ should cover, and then discuss the content of each subject until a consensus is reached. Then the moderators would just create the FAQ, and add what we decided should be there, and lock the thread so that noone could post any additions to it. If it turns out that a specific FAQ needed to be changed we could start another thread to discuss the changes and after it's agreed upon again, it could be changed and locked again.

That way there would be very little for the moderators to do and it would truely be a forum project that everyone could participate in.

My 2cents, If the forum had a FAQ there would be just as much debate on subjects like coax length vs VSWR because not everyone would agree on what the FAQ says. Extend that to any other topic you want, I still think it would be true. FAQs are good places for FACTS; those things that few would dispute. If you look at the Tools part of the menu to the left I think the forum already has a good start on a list of FAQs based on FACTS. Racer_x, I think your approach might have some chance of working for some topics. But I have been on this forum for a couple of years now and I believe that for some technical topics we have no more chance of coming to consensus than deciding if Chevy is better than Ford (MOPAR RULES!). Now, I'm not trying to downplay the idea, but for those worried that it might change the dynamic on the forum, I would say not to worry.

Actually, I agree on that topic.

Still, a well written article exposing different coax available, length, SWR, etc would be an enormous amount of work if it were done correctly.

If it were not done correctly, well what good would it be?

Still, there should be a bucket full of articles on the internet already on the Internet?

In such cases, I read the headline, and don't read any farther.

That said, lets not forget, that to the guy who doesn't possess that information, it is still very important, and they are greatful for the information that they get here. I know that I am -and I hope you all understand how happy I am when I get an answer to my questions.

Thanks..

Barracuda - There are FACTS about VSWR, it's just that most people don't know them. In a case like trimming coax it's pretty easy, trimming coax does effect the match that the radio sees. Some deal with that and ignore the antenna, some deal with the antenna and ignore the coax length, and some deal with it all. The argument isn't about the facts, it's about what each person feels is the most important.

Most issues can be broken down into fact and emotion/ego. Getting rid of the latter is the key to reaching a consensus.

Racer_x,
I agree with you 100%. I just don't know that we will ever be able get everyone to look at issues from a non-emotional point of view. That was the basis of my post above. Besides, if we did, that that would change the dynamic of this board dramatically.
