Anyone know much about the wireless internets. We've got one here where I live, but I use the cable internet. I've got a friend that lives on the edge of a good sized town about 50 miles from me. He's got a 60 foot tower, rohn 45 I think, its the kind that steps down in size toward the top, he's got a 6 element beam on top plus a antron 99 on a side mount, and he's on the highest ridge around that town. He asked me yesterday about an offer he just got, some company is putting in a wireless internet service there where he lives and they approached him about using his tower. They would install three small antennaes of some sort, plus they would use his electricity. For this, they offered him free internet service, he's on dialup now. He thinks it's a good deal, personally I wouldn't want their junk on my tower, but he's a little older and a lot tighter than I am. I asked him about interference, he said they asked him what his antennaes were for, he told them CB, and they said there would be no problem. But I don't know, that's why i'm asking. |

things to think about: Insurance, cost of electric vs internet access costs, tower access to them 24x7 for service, coordination between their space on the tower and his, term of contract, how long will they use the tower, what restrictions will they want to impose on how your friend may modify the tower or his equipment on it, What happens if they do say he's interfering with their gear, etc? just my 2cents

They shouldn't interfere. Wireless internet antennas work on 2.4Ghz. They are alot smaller then cb antennas. |

Wireless internet service is very similar to wireless routers in operation. I'd never do it just for free service. They're looking to do it on the cheap by using your friend's existing equipment. I'd hold out a while to see what they're really willing to do. If he has the best vantage point in the area they'll come up quite a bit. Whatever the agreement is, make sure he has an attorney look at it before he signs anything. They could have some really exploitive clauses in the contract. Especially where access to their equipment is concerned. He may want to limit the hours they have access to do maintenance. I don't think CB would interfere unless he's using tons of power and has harmonics all over the place. |

he should tell them they can use the tower if they sign a contract stating that they will NEVER switch to BPL!!!!!!!! matt |

Thanks guys, those are some good suggestions. I hadn't thought about their access to the tower, and also will remind him about the length and wording of the contract. He just runs a Ranger 2995, so he probably wouldn't bother their frequency. His tower is right behind his house, maybe 30 feet away, and they could bother him quite a bit if it required a lot of maintenance. I think they are trying to get by cheap also. If they have to buy/lease a piece of property, plus a tower, and getting power installed, that would be pretty expensive.

Another thing is that you have to supply RELIABLE power to them, as in no breaker flipping without prior notification, etc. We did this at the radio plant and it ended up being a good deal, BUT we were set up with constant power, knew what needed to be done as we already rented tower space. Power consumption is nil.but they will want to get to your tower for maintenence, they will notify you but if the tower is in the back yard and you have dogs...... Also they need to understand the freq's the guy is running and the power. They will also notify the FCC or their transmitter positions if they are legit, if your buddy is not....... Hmmmmm. I personally would pass, there are sooooo many towers with space on them, I think they should rent legit, If it seems too good to be true...... Chad |

Have your friend get an attorney and DO IT MAN!!! I dont know why they want his tower but get this! I have an uncle here in Indiana who owns farm land. One of the major cell phone companys about 10 years ago made him an offer. They agreed to pay him $20,000 dollars per year just to erect a tower on his property. Since then another tower and more money for about $60,000 per year. If he likes money as much as I do I think you should convince him!!!! |

Thanks again guys. Yeah if the tower wasn't so close to his house it would be different. Hotwire, i've got a similiar deal as your uncle here on my place. I'm in the southern edge of the ozarks, the elevation on most of my property is abt 1200 feet. Going south, you would be in Mexico before you found a higher elevation. Of course going north, west or east it wouldn't be that far. I've got a water tank on my property already, the price for such a small piece of land seems pretty good, but it messes up a couple acres or so except for pasture. You wouldn't want a nice home right under a water tower. I was approached by a company that builds the towers for cell phones, etc. Their offer for a site large enough for the tower is 200 dollars per month, that's for a 20 year lease. 2400 bucks a year sounds pretty good for property that's worth abt. 5000 per acre. But the down side, I would have that big tower within 1000 feet of my house. And like the water tank, it would mess up several acres as far as building sites. I know a guy that made this deal at the 200 per month, but his site was remote and not good for much else. Man i'm just 2 miles for Walmart supercenter. Anyway, i've turned them down so far. And as I just turned 70, don't think I need any 20 year leases. |
