Im thinking of buying a galaxy 99 but before i do i was wondering if they really drift on sideband or not?alot of people say they do.also after the galaxy 99 is converted for 11 meters how high and low does it go in the bands and do they come with an unlocked clarifier.. |

Freebird, Can't help you on the drifting as I have never owned or used one. After conversion it will cover from: 25.165 thru 28.755. No the Clarifier is Not Unlocked. Hope this helps, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

The drift is only during warm up, which sometimes can take a while. Once it is warmed up, it is just fine. When the Galaxy 99 is fully modified for 11 meters the frequency coverage is good but not as good as other radios. No the clarifier is not unlocked. The radio DOES seem to have cold solder joint issues! I would suggest another radio for you but I think that every one knows what that suggestion is and I will just leave it at that. Maybe I will let Pat say it for me BC |

for $5 less from copper, last time i looked at least, S9. that ALONE is the reason to buy the S9. as for the differences, or actually what is better about the S9??? where do you start??? the 1st reason to buy the S9 is it is NOT a galaxy. the reasons from there are all much easier to measure. seeing as bc's 'ess and nine' keys must have broken from overuse, i will accomadate him at this time. AWWWW I FIXED 'EM!!!! S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9SSS9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9S9 THAT'S BETTER! BC BTW Some of the reasons the S9 is better: Better reciever, more power, better looking, better echo, built in modulator, built in compressor, better frequency coverage, more "customiseable", better audio, it's not a Galaxy, better waranty, eisier conversion, allready "peaked and tweaked". That's just some of the reasons, of course some are just opinions but most are fact! |

Freebird, YES! the Clarifier is LOCKED from the Factory. To perform the Clarifier Modification on it can cause your Factory Warranty to be VOIDED. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

The 99 is a fine radio, as is the connex 4800, cant go wrong with either one of them. I dont care for the s-9, but then that is just my opinion! Rich |

Hey Freebird the Connex 4800 clarifier is unlocked from factory. I own one and stand by what I say. I have never used a better sidebander and this radio is as solid as a brick! Now I know Bc and Pat recommended the s9 and I respect that radio too. I have always taken the unbeaten path and highly recommend a connex to anyone. Either way you go you will have made the right choice. Also remember that an S9 will not work with a 2 pill amp. Like you need an amp for sideband very often though. |

hmmmmm. my S9's clarifier was unlocked from the factory. both the coarse AND fine. it covers about 6 down & 5 up, and in conjunction with the 10kc switch allows you to cover EVERY SINGLE freq from top to bottom, (unlike the S3 & M1 which has no fine tune & is therefore USELESS on 10m AM & FM net freqs ending in ANYTHING other then '5'. oh yeah, there are none. they end in '0'. can't get 'em with the S3 or M1. but you CAN with the S9!!) also checked with my friendly connexaholic & he says yes they are also unlocked from the factory, coarse only, as are the galaxy 99's. i have neither here to confirm that, but it is his area of expertise & he knows how i get when he gives me wrong info. for the record, my dislike of galaxy is well documented, however as i stated above, there is no reason to not buy the better all-around performing S9 over the dx99v. and it costs less too!! as for the connex 4800dxl (&cobra148fgtldx &rci6900f), i NEVER said there was anything wrong with them & they WERE tied for my 1st choice to replace my aging(but still smokin') ar3500 in my mobile. til i investigated what i'd heard about the brand new S9. i still feel the S9 is the better choice. if you already have 1 of the '3', then i suppose there is no need to purchase an S9 other then to fuel an addiction. if you ARE in the market for a new toy, & any of those '4' have the bells & whistles you're looking for, i would HIGHLY recommend the S9 over the other '3'. it does cost about $30 more then the 4800&148dx(but the same as the 6900f!!!), however. now the S9's better receiver & just the addition of a functioning speech compressor more then justify the $30 premium. that's what lou franklin's DSP costs, & most have a heckuva time getting it to work right. if $30 towards your station that may have considerably more then $500 invested in it, is too much $ to spend, hey, i can't twist your arm any harder then i already have. save the $30 for having the limiter clipped in the connex! ok just kidding. either way, the defense rests. |

The 10 KC switch moves your freq. up 10 KC (one channel) PERFECT for A channel opperation. BTW from what I have experienced, the S9 is unlocked from factory. I've said this before, but I dont know for sure but I havn't encountered any of the problems normally assosiated with a "locked" clarifier, so I would bet it is un-locked BC |

Freebird, Yeah my 4800 has the echo. On the box it said it was new so I gueess they recently added that. I rarely use echo AM and never on SSB but it does sound nice. The clarifier is daul control, course and fine. I suppose fine is all you need to tune in your recieve. As far as the course tune I use it to watch the freq. counter and to stay dead on freq. Course really doesnt matter on AM but for sideband once you have it you will want it from now on. Its pretty stable but as the 4800 warms up you will need that course adjustment for sideband. Try it! You will love it. OK the 10kc switch? In the cb band for example.... channel 15 is 27.135 channel 16 is 27.155 The 10kc switch can put you between 15 and 16 at 27.145. I believe that is a RC channel. The way channels are set up are like this in the entire band. I believe that this is the only worth of the 10kc switch.

That is the point of having dual clarifiers. One to tune in the RX and one to move the TX |

Iluvrf - The point of a dual clarifier as it's used on most radios is to have a coarse control that moves the frequency through the range quickly to get it close, and the fine moves the frequency slowly so you can then easily tune the frequency so you're synchronized. The potentiometers that make up the controls are connected in series. The coarse pot has a higher resistance, and the fine pot has a smaller one. If you use SSB a fair amount I'm sure you know how the pitch of one's signal changes with frequency drift. All radios drift from cold to warm, and some drift a little even after warmup. An unlocked clarifier will allow you to become totally synchronized with the transmit frequency of other stations so the pitch is right. While it's not very common, there are modifications that split the functions of the dual pot so that one controls transmit frequency and one controls receive frequency. It has it's benefits and drawbacks.
