Are the stock mics on the New green face 2950s adequate to do the job, or do they need replaced like most stock mics? |

Lazylizard, Sorry but with owning over 400 RCI's over the years we have really never found any of the Factory Stock Mics that Needed to be replaced. We do run the DM-452 on ours but Only because we do not like it when I/we keep hitting the Channel up and down buttons and like the little extra of a good power mic. Our 2970DX, 2990DX, 2990, and Galaxy Saturn Turbo all have the same Up/Down Mics and all still work Great when using them! Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

I find the stock mic to be more than adequate for every radio I've ever owned. Close talk the mic and speak in a slightly softer than normal voice and it should sound great. The best part of using a stock mic is that you don't generally pick up much background noise. |

Thanks - I just ordered a new RCI 2950 DX (never had one before) and that's what I wanted to know. I have a D104M6B handheld that I was going to wire for the new radio, but now I won't bother. |

When your trying to reach someone in the distance and your barely moving there needle & they have alittle noise. You will wish you had that extra punch that a power mic provides. Just my thoughts. JIM/PA/CEF 375 |

Well, if the stock mic has enough output - and they usually do - all you're doing is wasting battery power because the limiter isn't going to allow more modulation. If you drive the limiter so hard that it's always working ("riding the limiter") you'll gain a small amount of compression, but the limiter isn't fast enough to do much as a speech compressor. If you want to add some compression you're better off using a speech processor or a microphone that is made to compress speech. |

I had a cber about 15 miles away from me who barely moved my needle & mod was so low i could barely here him. He was on a limited income & could not afford a power mic, so, i gave him a DM-452 mic that i had for an extra. It greatly improved his mod & i don't have to strain my ears anymore. So, i'll be ordering another 1 0r 2 of those mics soon. JIM/PA/CEF375 |

Sounds like his limiter is cut. In that case using a power mic will really increase the average modulation level, but it'll cause splatter too. The higher the modulation, the more the splatter. Using a compression microphone or speech processor will raise the average modulation on a radio with the limiter in tact. On a radio with a clipped limiter, they'll cause less splatter because they reduce the ratio of peak to average modulation. That's why compression mics were king back in the days before modulation limiters were required. |

I've got a Night Eagle on my 2950dx. I can't handle using stock mics, I need that extra boost. I like to be on the verge of overmodulation, without being overmodulated!!! Oh man, I'm probably gonna hear it for that one! |

yeah Racer X hes using an older radio & the limiter does sound like its no longer intact. Hes disabled with little money, so, i was just happy to help him out. And it was worth it as my hearing isn't the best either that i can hear him better./ Timebomb likes to crank the mod....LOL You should be ashamed...LOL...(Teasin) JIM/PA/CEF375 |

Road_warrior - That was a nice of you to do. I've helped out a friend or two myself. Timebomb - I hope you don't mean that you have a clipped limiter and you run your mic so high that you're nearly distorted. Distortion happens long after overmodulation begins so you can't depend on distortion to tell you when you're overmodulating. |

Stock mics work good but have you ever noticed when you buy a nice radio the mic that comes with it seems to feel light and cheap? Its like they build strong heavy radios but ignore the mic. Example.... The mic that came with my connex should of said Fisher Price on it! It works right but I feel like I can squish it to smitherines! |

Racer x - No, I'm not distorting, I always make sure it's not feeding back, or overmodulating, using headphones, to make sure the station is sounding loud...but delivering clear audio as well. I just really like power mics for the option of turning 'em up a bit when needed.

There's not really much to a hand microphone. I bought a Shure 596T hand mic which had an MSRP of over $100 originally. I bought it because it was NIB for less than $10 shipped and I have never tried a Shure hand mic. It felt nice and heavy so I opened it up to see what's going on inside, and there is a metal block in there for no other reason that to add weight. |

I found the same thing in a General Lee hand mic. Thing felt real nice in my hand. Opened it up....lead weight in there to make it feel good. My goodness. |
