I am participating right now in the above exercise run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. There are two check-in points *somewhere* in the US. It is on frequencies scattered thru the HF spectrum. It is designed to test the viability and reliability of our National Emergency communications system in the event of a disaster--such as that that occurred on 9/11. It's pretty COOL! LOL! I'm hearing government and military agencies check into the net from all over the country such as US Coast Guard, US Air Force, MARS, Navy, NIS, NSA, and Civil Air Patrol. These agencies are located all over the country. It's pretty neat to hear the different transmitters and their own *unique* sound. And it is a heck of a lot of fun. It is also nice to know that there are reliable communications resources located in every state and territory of the US in case somebody wants to attack us. Where I am in the East, I listened to the Coast Guard check in from the Pacific Ocean with a BOOMING transmitter, and I betcha it didn't take a whole of power to do it either. It is actually done by utilizing the MUF--maximum usable frequency which is roughly the highest frequency that can be used to carry the traffic. Sometimes it is done by simply listening to WWWV and setting the net frequency in this manner (well, it's a little more complicated than that, but, hey, ya gotta start somewhere) (grins) So if you wonder at times what is being done to protect us from our enemies, this is one of the things done ever so often to make sure our comm systems are up to snuff when the jig goes up. Communications is a support function and is key to Command and Control in any organization.
