I still comparing radios because i want to make the right buy/decision. Is the president grant 50watts am 150watts ssb? After peak and tune how much power can you get? Can you add a echo board? if yes what board would be best? What would be your personal opinion on this radio? thank you for your comments. |

No, it is a bone stock XL,I bought it new in box this past summer and just want to keep it original.it is so quiet on recieve compared to my sears and TR696fD1 so it seems like I can hear faint stations much better. I am going to see if I can get another new XL to mod. Is that mod a good one? i`m not up on mods yet, just getting back to CBs this past summer I have alot to learn. |

dxuall, got to be a bit more specific about which grant you are referring. there is the REAL, LEGAL cb grants-1st by president, then unidens xl,lt & the followup that was advertised briefly & never released, then discontinued-they may have called it 'classic' or something. THEN there is the export, 1st called a president grant then a superstar grant & president 1 more time before being discontinued. it does not even resemble the xl or lt, could have the suffix DX after grant, though not printed on radio. it is a 3 band dual final double conversion receiver, actually a very fine radio. an excellent choice if it can be found. the final grant around is from the general series, a general grant. it is another clone of the connex4800/cobra148fgtldx/rci6900ftb. it has a 2-2290 amp built ON to the radio. when acquired in true unmodified form, just like the original 6900ftb's you need to remove & replace the bandselector switch with the provided 6 band switch & put a little sticker on the front of the radio so you remember it now has 6 bands, not 3. rci originally did that with the 6900 too. classy, huh? they are out there, hard to find, search the web. i've seen them range in price from $380-$440 as recently as monday. not sure i'd purchase from those places though.don't know if any of them are in production any more. but i don't think any of them are bad choices if you're willing to take the risk of the purchase. 'grant' is one name that is really fine, whichever version you get. hey airplane1, the TR696fd1 uses a different board then the TR296/cobra148/grantxl, the channel mod is different & you get different freqs-you say it is not as quiet as your xl. i got a good deal on a few brand new 696fd1's, if i want 'em but can't find anybody with 1. local used to have the original 696f mobile when it came out (i modded it, but didn't pay attention to rcv at the time)but has since sold all his radios. just curious if it receives like your xl or is it REALLY noisy with white noise. |

that's the general grant from the so-called general amateur radio series. yea. i believe it uses real rci boards & is assembled overseas & sent back here. put a power mic on 1 for a trucker a while ago. my brother works with him occasionally & says he still has that radio & it has never broken down on him. i do remember it being fairly quiet on receive & getting excellent signal reports after putting the mic on it. like i said, i saw them available from at least 4 places on the net just this week. would i purchase from them? good question... |
