The little box on the back of the meter that I take is for the illuminating faceplate, makes a funny humming or grinding sound sometimes. Has anyone else seen or heard this? Also sometimes it just decides it doesn't want to come on, then it will when it decides to. Anyone? |

I will resist the urge to talk about Galaxies again and just say this; I have never seen or heard of any kind of lamp in a CB making noise before. As far as the box in back of the meter, heck I don't know what the heck that is without actually seeing it. Maybe if you could describe it better. Bc |

The box I am talking about is the one that controls the illumination for the backlit faceplate. It's a small metal casing over some transistors I assume. I haven't removed it to see. I just know that sometimes it hums or makes a grinding sound and when you hear it you can get close to that box and hear it coming from there. If you disconnect the wires that run to the faceplate, the sound stops. So I know it controls that and that is where it is coming from. |

normaly the small metal box behind the meter in most export radios is the (for lack of a better phrase) frequency board. I don't know and forgot what its called but normaly has NOTHING to do with illumination sorry I cant be of more help BC |

bc needs thicker glasses, porkchop, he can't see that the WHOLE FACEPLATE is illuminated on that radio, not just the meter like in our oldfashioned radios. or maybe just any glass in those glasses.:-) no, i've never heard anybody complain about that before. |

If you remove the faceplate and remove the two screws that holds the front half of the chassis on the main body, you can roll it down toward you and see exactly where the faceplate plugs into the board. Right beside it is where that box is. I know the board you are speaking of, not that far back into the radio. Directly behind the meter, it's there. I've never heard of it either, but this one is doing it. Also seen a 48T that wasn't working, I unplugged the wires for the faceplate and plugged it back in. It works fine now. I don't get it. I really like Galaxy radios, but maybe it's time they let those little kids have a day off.. |

the box is a transformer for incandesent lighting. the transformer is needed to step up the 12 volts in to 110 in order for the lighting to illuminate. normally a humming sound is normal, but on a radio im not shure if its producing enough voltage to be audible. a new magnum might be worth looking into if its somthing you really want, in the past i wouldnt have recommend a magnum due to the cold solder issues and various other problems. now they seem to have that fixed. if i were to buy a magnum it would be a 257, they want to much for a s3 (that needs a freq counter) or a s9 that you pay $80 for a $10 2290 |

The lighting is probably electro-luminescent as opposet to HV incandesent, yes it is probably a little switch mode inverter and is in a metal case for a reason, they make hash! Try confirming ground integrity to the sheilded box, I may have come ungrounded and is becoming a poor sheild. |

Some of the older Galaxy radios had a high pitched hum in the freq counter. There's a fix for it back in the archives of this forum. My old 88 has the hum but since i've got a high freq hearing loss, I can't hear it,, so haven't bothered to fix it. It wasn't enough to be noticable in a mobile anyway. |

The humming you here is going to hum. It is coming from that little metal box. The ones in the cobras hum too. As long as it's not in your receive you have no problem. Try this, when it's humming away turn the dimmer down very slowly and the hum will start to go away. It should get quiet enough not to be noticable and maintain plenty of brightness. There is nothing wrong with it, they just do that. |

I'm going to buy one of these S9's. If it isn't as strong as a Galaxy 93T, does that mean you two are going to eat it? I mean literally take it apart and eat the pieces? I don't see how a dual final (1969) radio is going to compare to a radio with a 2290 final...But I don't doubt that it's a nice radio and certain parts will out perform a Galaxy...

easy, waterboy. we're trying to be serious here. a little barbecue sauce or honey-mustard & it will go down just fine. just take SMALL bites, porkchop! receiver-hands down, no questions asked, it's NO CONTEST. the S9 all the way. as for transmit, galaxy is rating that single 2290 a bit low. so let's give its rated 80 watts. the 44 rated watts + 3 or more db gain from the compressor of the S9 gets the appearance of 88 watts or more from the S9. who's on top now? then what's up with the hi-med-lo power switch-VARIABLE is needed, especially to use an amp. as hard as it is to set the S9 up on an amp, the 93T is harder, unless you just crank it up & use it with a texas star dx1200. i mean other then me maybe, how many people really are going to set up an amp that big? out of the box vs out of the box, looks like the S9 to me. yea, some tweaking & more should get that 93t up over 100 watts, but there's already some S9's out there getting 65+ out of those 2 dinky 1969's, lots of major surgery to get it, but the same with the 93t. but there's that compressor again effectively doubling talk power, again it bumps the S9 over the 93t. tell me when to stop. :-) actually, porkchop, if galaxy/connex/rci did something with the receivers of their radios, there would be less of a difference between them & the magnum/uniden/presidents of the world. in the real world, if i need to outtalk so-and-so that bad, i just get a bigger amp. you could take a $70 tristar 120 & outtalk ANYBODY if the amp was big enough! |
