I ordered my 257 on Friday and can't wait to get it. It sounds perfect for me since I run SSB most of the time and don't use all the noise toys that are on most of the other exports. Reading the reviews and posts from folks like mikefromms convinced me to get one. As I said I can't wait!!!!!!!

The radio is really a dilly. I've used mine in ssb mode and am and get flowers from everyone. Used it on 10 meters on 28.360 yesterday and talked to a station in California for probably 30 minutes. Talked to a couple of other on that frequency as well and the hams gave the radio a good report. They couldn't believe I was on a $170 radio with a $17 Dm-452 mic and Imax! I was asked to turn the echoe off the mic. After that, I was clear and loud. On 11 meters I add a little echoe.

A big 10-4 on the Magnum 257. Once you learn your way around that radio you will like it a lot. Very pretty blues face lights on the radio and the s-unit bar style meter is 3 inches long when someone puts a 30 s-unit on it. I have mine fastened to the bottom of a shelve on my bookshelve facing me. Love it.

I received my Magnum 257 today. (from Coppers) One question is the CPI compressor built into the radio with no adjustment or on off function? There is no mention of it in the operating manual nor can I find any on the radio. Help.

Waverider,

What do you need help with?

It is Built into the Radio and there is No Adjustments to be made or a ON/Off function.

It is fully operational anytime the radio is on and being used.

Thanx Lon, just wondering. Got wonderful reports on SSB last night. The receive audio is also very good. Several folks thought I was running my Kenwood. This radio is a gem and a bargan at that. I'm with Mike and would highly recommd it. Thanks to Magnum and Coppers for making such a nice product at a price the better half doesn't get up set about :-)))))))))))))))))))))))

Lon yes I always read the reviews and users comments. I'm not made of $$$ so I try to get it right the first time. I loved your review of the M1 using the paint shaker. Now that is a test:-))
Thanks for all the time you spend taking care of us on the board!

Waverider,

You are very welcome.

Sam told me the M-1 was built like a tank and I wanted to see if it would hold up like a tank.

Tinman,

Hook it up in the house and get used to it first. Can be a bear to learn whilst traveling at highway speeds.

Once you've got it down it's a sinch. I surprised some hams with the audio on this radio. They couldn't believe such clear and clean audio could come from a $169.00 radio. I really love the adjustable power control. It controls every power source. Really nice on SSB on 10 meter where you can drive an amp. I was told to keep this radio because it sounds better than I ever have. I don't understand how I could sound better than I ever have having owned a 2517; so, those comments are questionable, but they said I wouldn't need another radio. Rats, I've got to find a way to justify that S-9!

" Rats, I've got to find a way to justify that S-9!"-c'mon now, mikefromms. christmas is coming. you're just making sure your present arrives in time. hey, i justified mine by telling my wife bc910 & a couple guys on a computer told me i should get one. or else. i've already paid for marriage with my life, so what's a couple more pairs of shoes? my part if the closet is hers anyway.

LOL. Seriously, someone suggested that I wouldn't improve my station enough going from the 257 to the S-9 to justify the extra expense. That kind of got me to thinking. So, I'm thinking it all over.

Mikefromms,

It is very simple.

If you do not need or want or plan to use the features (bells & whistles} that the S-9 has then the Magnum 257 will fit your needs.

Both are Great Radios but it depends on what you want and what you will use in the radio.

Well, if I ever get ready to step up a little Copper will have the S-9. Man, has radio come a long ways in the last 10 years.
