I think this may be a great radio. I know more then a few of you guys have them, or had them. Anyone know where I can get one? I think used is the only way, they don't make them anymore right? Fill me in guys, is there another cheaper radio like this out there? |

sodapop, bruce is correct. the 840 replaced the 747. both are great radios, much better than the ft-757. stay away from that one unless it's cheap. my only complaint with the 747 is the VFO. it clicks as you turn it. not a big isssue at all. it'll still run circles around the 757 and will most likely last longer. check ebay for both the 747 and 840 models. 747's can be had for around $250 on good cheap days. |

No ft-747 on ****, and the ft-840 is a little more then I might want to spend. Is there a radio like the 747? Even new, that one really looks like it would fit my needs. |

keep an eye out on the internet auction sites. they turn up there fairly often. a local ham shop had one here for a couple months. it just happens that they sold it today. it was priced at $300 and was in good condition. don't give up, one will turn up soon. |

Well I am watching a few rigs: Yaesu ft-840 Kenwood ts-680s Yaesu ft-707 Icom ic-707 They all seem real nice. The ft-840 looks real sweet. But I am not sure what a good price for these rigs are. But I hope to have something real soon. |

Sodapop The ft-840 is a fine radio. Mine i have all the filters and the fm board. For coppers sunday net it runs from about 10 am untill just after 4pm and is used on the 10 and 12 meter nets. I have never had to touch the dial .... it is very stable and will just sit there. Bruce |

Bruce Sounds like a winner to me. What is a fair price for the ft-840? |

Just curious - why the TS-680S and not the TS-140S? The TS-680S is the TS-140S with 6 meters added. |

check those sites regularly, sodapop. 2 of them update daily, one updates 2x a month and the other monthly. wow that was quick, whichever 1 had the 747, was on there only thurs or fri. you could also call to check, & let 'em know you're looking! |

Stickshift, What exactly were the problems you experienced with the Yaesu FT-757? I bought one back in 1986 and have not had any problems with it so far. But then, the rig is not used all that often due to other responsibilities that keep my hobby time limited. Is there something specific I should be looking out for? I would appreciate the advice. Thanks! |

Sarge, From my experiences, the 757 receive was pretty dead, the noise blanker was pretty much worthless, and the stability of the rig isn't even close to the 840. The 757 was and still is an ok rig, but most ham shops will not even touch them any more because parts are so scarce. The 747's are still available in shops as used radio's for sale, and parts are still available. As for the 840, it is still in production and used sets are readily available for a fraction of the cost. I purchased mine new about a year ago and is serving me very well. |
