I bought a Galaxy-959 new over a year ago . The recive is darn good , low noise floor etc. But on transmit it was lacking , so i did my own tune up and it is awsome on xmit with good CLEAN loud audio , good power and swing . I am using a astatic road devil mic which has good reports of being "a big radio" .. Only problem i have had with the radio was it was off freq. on SSB new . I got that fixed on my own , but it is WAY off freq. on SSB in cold wx until the radio is physicaly warmed up .. besides that , i am VERY pleased with the radio after i did my owm tune up . { yes , i am qualified , been a aircraft avionics tec. for 14 yrs.} .. Anyone else as pleased with the 959 as i am ?

Ferd1605,

WELCOME TO THE COPPER FORUM!

I have only owned & used 1 Galaxy 959 and it was a very good little radio.

I aligned it and peaked it, and added a Channel Guard filter to it and the performance was good.

I'm please with my 959. I to have the freq problem, if you want to call .001 off when it's a very cold morning.
I have a external speaker. Because of the low tone from the one in the radio.
I got mine from Copper. My question is when Copper tunes and peaks, how many watts does it put out? I ask because I'm thinking of adding a KL-60 to it.

I like the 959/949/2547/TR-696 chassis very much.
I use a Galaxy DX 2547 for my base, run a TR-696 FD1 (newer Ranger CB model...love the American flag faceplate) in one of my mobiles, and have a Galaxy 949 w/ external Galaxy freq counter ready to go in another mobile.

This chassis seems very stable to me, great on sideband, easy to tune & mod, and very reliable.

FWIW, I recommend these radios to anyone interested in getting a 40 channel, type accepted CB radio.

Ferd1605,

I agree with Mike743 and Lon. Other than the freq. Drift during cold days, it has been a GREAT radio. I actually sent mine back to Galaxy to double check the freq drift. Some minor adjustments locked it back into gear. As a Galaxy tech suggest to me, and I share with you… Open the clarifier! I suggest the CB Tricks.com Option 2 (quick and easy). This will guarantee that you receive and transmit on the same EXACT freq. I, like Lon, am going to install Channel Guard. This little miracle will further enhance an already NICE Radio. Oh, I also enjoy the talkback, roger beep and other little bells and whistles upon occasion. I don’t use them much but, sometimes it is nice to have them available when Dxing VERY long distances or double-checking modulation via audio. Oh, I run mine with an Astatic D104-M6B and a Wilson Silver Load. I have yet to gat a complaint.

You should not be disappointed with this radio.

Nice to hear all good on the 959 ... people around here thinks any Galaxy that is not "leagal type " radio is junk ... But i have been into radio and electronics for well over 25 yrs and i know better, besides , i have a ham ticket to talk long distance with , i am not on the air to impress anyone with a fancy radio ... Now , is there a base radio with the same board as the 959 ? ? a leagal radio that is.

Hey friends, new guy here. I have used my 959 a little bit. Nice radio for AM. I tried the SSB and turned my nose away. Wimpy SSB reciever. But I found this radio at a flea market for pennys so no complaints. Good for external amp I must add. It has good audio on AM but with a quite floor that has like a crackle sound. Lots of knobs and buttons to get used to. Kinda looks like a 99.

Ferd1605,

If you are looking for another Galaxy the DX 2547 is the one you are looking for. Texas Ranger also uses the same board in some of it's rigs. Click the link below. This is the best price I have found on the 2547 :-) You get all of the same capabilities of the DX 959 plus an extra digit on the freq. counter.

My 2 cents : I have a 959 With an Astatic 636 Mic, Wilson 1000 antenna, and a Ranger external speaker. I'm always told that I'm coming through "Loud-n-Proud" so I think it's a pretty good setup for a car. The Galaxy products seem to be good quality.
