I know in one review it states you do not need a power mike with the M-257, but is there a power mike that will work with the radio? Do any of you use a power mike and if so, does it overdrive the radio's modulation?

How about that SuperStar DM-452? Would it be worth it to put it on my Magnum 257 I now use as a base?

Your most honest replies are appreciated.

As long as you adjust the mic to the right output level it won't overdrive the radio's audio circuit.

Why would you want to use a power microphone with a radio that has a speech processor built into it? You're not going to get more modulation - it doesn't work that way. No matter how much audio you jam into the radio it won't overmodulate unless you adjust the limiter to allow overmodulation. It'll eventually drive the transistors into oscillation and cause squeal.

Will copper wire a SuperStar-DM457 to be used with the Magnum 257? I, too, think the stock mike is too small.

Mikefromms,

Yes, but it would cost a LOT less to just get a Mic Adapter.

OPTION to have a Mic wired is below:

Have Mic Wired/Please specify which radio in comments: add 10.00

Just a thought.

That mike adaptor is something I've never seen. This is not a mike end, it is an adaptor. So, do I solder anything? Don't mean to sound dumb, but if I ordered a mike would it have some kind of standard end on it so the adaptor could be inserted to be used on the Magnum 257? Hope this makes sense.

Mikefromms,

I think Copper hes the New adapeter for the Magnum radios but you can call and check.

1-800-626-6343

I did a Review on the Mic Adapters back in October, of 2002 you can read in the:

Subscriber (Preview)
» Product Reviews
» Microphone Adapters
» Review

If they do not have the adapters for the Magnum Radios then you can have them wire the mic for you, or wire it yourself as I also have the Mic Wiring for the 257 in my Review on it also.

Hope this helps,

I just bought a mic adapter, works great on my 2990, converted it to a 4 pin, which a lot of mics are wired for from the factory.

Mikefromms,

What is there to get?

Order the Mic and tell them you want it wired for a Magnum 257 or just buy a 6 pin mic plug and wire it yourself.

The standard Cobra 4 pin Mic wiring is listed on the LEFT of the Forum under Tools and the Mic Wiring for the 257 is Listed in the Review.

Very easy to do and ALL of the information is already listed here in the forum.

Or make a Post in the:

Ask The Tech
» Microphone Wiring

area and I will be happy to walk you through it.

Hope this helps,

Mikefromms - It's sort of like an adapter you use to plug a grounded plug into a non-grounded outlet.

The adapter is basically a microphone plug and socket connected together to adapt the pin pattern of your radio to a more universal pattern. It plugs into the mic jack on your radio and then you plug a microphone into it.

But it works very well, has up/down switches. I got used to it's size. Doesn't make me feel less manly :-)

As a recreational bodybuilder it makes me feel like I'm handling a peanut.

Okay, which mic would you perfer on the 257: the handheld d-104 or the SuperStar DM-452?

I will, repeat...will be ordering something by tomorrow (if I'm alive)

No-one said anything about being less manly because you use mike that comes with radio. If you like stock mic use it.

mikefromms, I personally
prefer th DM-452. I get excellant reports with it on my 257. I have yet to have it on any radio that I didn't have good reports. Just my thoughts. I hope whatever you get sounds good on your 257.

Thank you for your straight answer. I've been reading a lot about this mic and just needed a little push to buy one.

Here I come calling again, Copper. Hope you don't tire of me.

Mike I bought two of the DM 452's. I figured what the heck I have just about every other other mic made in the last 35 years! I gotta tell ya I was knocked out buy how well they work, don't let the low price scare you. I put one on my wifes Uniden and it makes it sound like a "big" radio! As for a power mic on a 257 I have found most of the newer radios have a ton of audio built in to them. I have a Delta Force and the audio is loud and clean with the stock mic on AM & SSB. Speaking of the Magnum 257 I called Coppers to order one yesterday and they were sold out. BUMMER! Looks like I'll have to wait a while. Been doing a lot of reading and since I don't want or use all the bells & whistles on other radios and operate SSB 99% of the time this seems like the perfect radio for my truck. Hope Coppers has "em back in stock soon.

I love this radio. It has good ears and gets good smooth audio reports. The blue front is pretty at night. I have mine mounted underneath one of my bookshelves about eye level. looks really cool. I have the external speaker hooked to a Kenwood speaker built for Kenwood TS-850s. Sounds as good as a base station to me. Can't wait to try the DM=452. Other users do seem to be happy with it.
