I'm going to buy a new setup for in the house, I plan on spending a lot of money so before I do I would like to have everyone's input on what I have thought about buying, I want to be loud and (lock down the channel) when I key up! I was going to go with a Galaxy 66V peaked and tuned from where ever i get it from with a RK56 mic on it, I'm looking at the Xforce 60012 base amp and i plan on driving it with a amp that I already have (Silver Eagle 350).Now the antenna I was thinking about going with was the IMAX 2000, I already have a tower up, it's 100' and with that long of a run I was going to use LMR-400 coax.Does this sound like it would be a pretty good setup or is there anything here that I'm looking at that I might should stay away from??? |

Some suggestions and thoughts: Get the radio "peaked and tuned" by a technician who knows what he's doing. By that I mean someone who doesn't clip limiters and uses an oscilloscope. Ask him to show you the modulation waveform of the radio on his oscilloscope. It should be a nice smooth sine wave with no flat topped wave forms. I'd suggest a desk microphone at home, maybe one with compression which will help you sound nice and loud - a Turner +3 or Super Sidekick. You might consider a speech processor if you want to be "loud" but don't want to use a compression microphone. I don't know why you'd need an amp with a big tower and good antenna. You should have a nice signal with the setup you mentioned without the amplifier. Even with the amplifier you won't be able to "lock down the channel" unless everyone who operates on your channel lives within a block of you. Just so you know - a 60' tower is the maximum antenna height for CB use. If you caused any interference or complaints from local radio folk, the tower itself would draw attention, so you might want to consider using a strictly legal radio and no amplifier. |

Your plans sound great. Just be aware of any interference the amp might cause in your area. With that Imax 2000 up that high you will talk a long ways! I just got an Imax 2000 myself with gdp/kit. Look forward to getting on the air with it. I also ordered the LMR-400 coax. Mine is over a 150 ft. run! Sounds like you are going to do it right. Be sure to run a ground wire from the base of the antenna to a ground rod driven at least 8 feet in the ground. Ground your station, radio, amp too. Mikefromms CEF #171 Sunking |

Thanks for the fast reply, I have to say....I have changed my mind on the radio,I'm going to go with the S-9. That is a good looken radio and from what everyone has said about the S-9 it has been all good! The Xforce that I'm going to go with "60012" is a high drive, can anyone tell me what would be a good wattage to run it with? I have a amp that I was planing on using for the driver, it a Silver Eagle 350 4 pill and does right at 120 on low and 240 on high. Xforce website show's that the X-80 to be used as the driver which is 80 watts(RMS) and 300watts(PEP)so I called and talked with the tech at Xforce and he told me to drive it with 20watts???? The X-80 does more than that. Also will the S-9 need to be peaked and tuned or will it be good to go right out of the box, I want to nice and LOUD but clean and clear. Thanks, Kevin |

Your plan sounds even better with the S-9! I have a Magnum 257. What features, audio tone, and good looks, and mine is the baby of the Magnum line! Imagine what yours (the flagship) will sound like? You may not even need an amp. Can't answer the drive question. All I know is the S-9 is might powerful and I'm sure one of the techs here can lead you in the right direction so you don't melt the finals out of your amp. 73's Mikefromms |

Dude - just a suggestion - don't make posts about using amps on CB and then post your callsign. You're just asking for a fine. |

kpoe28, you could drive the 60012(you are talkingX60012B, 6x2879 base model, right?) with the S9, topgun 'on' & RF power anywhere-fully clockwise, about 10watts dead key, you could see around 300 watts key, 900+ swing from the amp. OR, is the eagle capable of handling 30+ watts swing? if it is, go-S9 topgun 'on', and variable power all the way counterclockwise, check to see what the lowest dead key you can get out of the eagle, 25 watts or less a must, and slowly turn S9 power up til xforce dead keys about 450 watts. don't let x force dead key more then 450 OR input from eagle dead key over 25 watts.(if eagle won't go that low, find another driver box, or just use the S9 & no driver box) if everything sets up like that, you could see 1200 watts swing. remember, you have to deal with whatever the results are-no more then 25 from driver or 450 from X, if X's output is under 450 w/25 from driver, oh well, 300 is a good #, too. if your results are WAY off from these estimates, stop & recheck everything. blowing up $1500 worth of equipt in 1 quick shot ain't no fun! |

Well I think the eagle will dead key well over 25 watts on low power even with the S-9 topgun turned fully counterclockwise, with 1 to 2 watts in the eagle will do around 75 ( it has 4 pills in it "MRF-454's")Would the S-9 over drive the Xforce XT-40012 base amp,it has 2 x 2SC2290/4 x 2SC2879 in it and needs no driver. Thanks for the info on this matter, I need all i can get on this as i will be ordering one next week |

if i'm not mistaken, the XT-B (i think) is the 2-2290x 4-2879 amp, the x400 a 1-2290x 4-2879 and the 40012 is a straight 4x2879. if it's the XT-B you're talking about, that one will work with the S9. keep the S9 in the 3 watt dead key range, and you should see around 250-300 watts carrier from the x force, keep it towards 250. swing should be in the neighborhood of 900-1000 watts. keep in mind Xforce bases get a higher output then the same transistors in an x mobile because their builtin power supplies run at higher voltages then a normal supply. so you couldactually see more then this. if you use SSB alot, you may want to order direct & have delay/bias for SSB added. it takes a bit of tweaking, but stock xforce class C amps can be made to sound alright on SSB if you play with wattage and mic adjustments. |

It's illegal to use THOSE amps on 10 meters. Read the rules about HF amplifiers for amateur service. |

Patzerozero....If you were running a S-9 and you was going to buy a Xforce....Would you go with the XT-40012 Base with the lower drive or with the XT-60012 Base with the high drive? The XT-60012 is only $25.00 more, but I won't be able to run the eagle on the 60012, it just puts out way to much to drive it with so I'll only be running the S-9 with it...so which one do you think I would get the best Performance out of? |

Take a good look at the connex 4800dxl. I operate a linear with 1.5 watt Dead Key. Swings about 40 watts. (for sideband to sound right). Clean as a whistl! You can hear a pin drop in the audio. I hear that an S 9 will walk all over my connex but I believe that is only opinion. I get good unsolicited remarks all the time. Thats when you know you bought the right radio! |
