A friend of mine and I were on the internet talking and I heard the skip rolling in from the Mid-West. I noticed little by little it was shifting east with the storm front. I told him to hop on the radio a few channels below 1 and wait cause I knew while tracking the storm it was a matter of time before it hit the Virginia area. I moved to Florida a little over 2 years ago and missed the old group. Thunderbolt in <virginia> who I told to stand by on that channel via internet started calling the old crew on the phone and telling them to get on the radio and listen, and he was sure they would hear an old fimillar voice <me>. Well here comes the front and bang Hello from Central Florida. They could not believe it. They thought for sure I had made a suprise trip back up to Virginia LOL. These conditions and the good old qso we used to have several years ago locally lasted for an amazing 4 1/2 hours straight flawlessly last night. If I didn't know better I would swear we were on 80m where these sort of communications are a nightly occurance. I just thought a few of you folks would enjoy this little tid-bit. Conditions like these are on the downside. 4 1/2 amazing totally steady hours straight on the 11m band! Gotta love it.

I heard West Virgina loud and clear, wiping out the local radios in TN last nite. We had to move our Friday night roll call to another channel! |

about 2 weeks ago we had skip from boston & providence ri booming in AM & SSB. every channel had 30 over S9 signals BOOMING in for about 20-30 minutes. that's dx from approx 90-130 miles. 1st time i'd ever heard mass & ri in dx. approx 150 miles to poconos & upstate ny is shortest dx i'd ever seen on 11m before. after 1/2 hour, it lengthened thru vt, nh, pa & upstate ny to more 'normal' distances of several hundred miles, maine, maritime canada, ontario, upstate ny, ontario & ohio. spoke to several in boston on AM mobile 100 watts, by the time i got to base needed about 400w ssb to get back to boston & albany ny. when distance lengthened, went back to 50 watts from icom w/no problems. |
