I am in college right now and I want to start talking on HR-2510 at school but I need a "portable base" antenna since I live in an apartment. What would be a good antenna setup for my purpose. Thanks Sandman KB3BYW |

a dipole would work good. they can be made for next to nothin or purchased fairly cheap. do a search on dipole on the forum should get lots of ideas. OR if they will let you put up a laser 500. JK. tony |

I think I might go with a dipole, but what about a 4 or 5 foot firestik, mounted on to something and then grounded? would it work? |

Sandman351 - A fiberglass whip with an appropriate counterpoise would certainly work, but wouldn't be idea. I think Copper carried a small fiberglass groundplane antenna at one time, but I can't find it on their website. You may be able to take advantage of your specific situation. Have you asked permission to put up an antenna? You've got an amateur radio license and that might sway them to allow you to put up something reasonable. An A99 mounted on a chimney or vent pipe would work much better for you than a compact antenna. If you already asked and were denied permission, you may want to try to put something up anyway, but be ready to take it down if they ask. Do you live in a large apartment building or something like a house converted to apartments? Is the building metal or is it a wood structure? What kind of access to the roof do you have from your apartment? Is it a large flat roof? |

I don't really have the ability to install something as big as an A99. When it come to building a dipole do I need a bauln? If so I know you can use coax to make a bauln but what is the size and number of turns for the coil? |
