I'm thinking about getting another mobile for use on am for cb in the house. I need one that can get "loud and proud" for cb use. I've noticed the Galaxy 55 is in that range and a couple of Magnum radios, the m-1 and m/s 3. I need some am cb audio. I'm fixed up on SSB. mikefromms |

Mike, with my General Lee and a Solarcon A99 antenna I'm getting out 17-20 miles with no problem and I'm hitting 8 on the other guy's scale. |

I guess if I buy another mobile I'll go ahead and get the Magnum s-9. I'm still thinking about it. mikefromms |

After reading Lon's review of the Magnum 257 and other remarks, I've ordered a new Magnum 257. That with a KL-500 should be plenty loud. mikefromms |

Hmmmm, I would say my Uniden PRO510 XL or Uniden PC78 with a DM452 Power Hand Mic on it. Actually any radio with a Power Mic on it can sound as good as any other radio out there if it is properly tuned and aligned. Since your question was: A really loud am mobile for under $200? And since you did not ask about a SSB radio or any other features, then any radio can be "loud and proud" on AM. And Copper gives you a Large Selection to choose from for AM ONLY Radios. I agree with Lon that any AM CB sounds good as long as it's aligned well. I've tweaked some really inexpensive radios so they can hit 100% modulation peaks, and I haven't come across one yet that didn't sound good. Throw on a compression microphone and you've got one loud radio. The biggest difference from radio to radio is the receiver and it's various features. |

Lon, With a DM452 on a Cobra 29 LTD CLASSIC I get feedback if the mic gain is open anymore than half way. Is that normal? If turn the mic gain down will my transmit audio suffer? |

You're getting oscillation because the microphone has too high of an output. Most CBs already have lots of gain in the audio circuit so you don't need to turn up the output on a power mic. Usually it's enough to just barely crack it open. Turn the mic gain on the radio up the whole way and just barely crack the gain on the microphone and you should be fine - that way the battery in the microphone will last longer too. Your audio should be fine. Listen to it on another radio or ask someone you trust for a radio check. More gain on a power mic isn't going to make you louder anyway. After a certain point the limiter in the radio limits the audio level and it doesn't go higher. Turning up the gain beyond that point just increases the backround noise in the transmission. If the limiter is adjusted too high or disabled the higher you turn up the microphone the more your signal will splatter. |

Cbblackbeard, Racer X is correct. And yes this is normal if your mic gain is set too high and you are over modulating (Over 100%). I have never had to adjust any of the internal controls on the DM-452 mics and just barley have the echo adjusted to just to the LEFT the first dot on the Mic. I have all of my equipment peaked and tuned so that no matter what power mic I use I have never had to move it past the first notch or dot or #1 position. This way I am generally in the ballpark of 90 to 100% Modulation and still have a good smooth modulation carrier on the scope. The internal adjustments of the DM452 mics are set pretty well direct from the factory and I personally have never found any reason to adjust them. Also the setup in your truck can cause major feedback with your external speaker if you are using one and having your mic gain on the radio set too high. On your next trip stop by one of the radio shops that have a scope have them check it and ask them to let "let you" see the pattern on the scope. What you are looking for is a good smooth rolling pattern with no spikes like an ocean wave and you modulation peaking at 95 to 100% at the loudest. Big trucks have a tendency to jar everything loose over time including your internal adjustments and components inside your radio. What I always did when I aligned mine and peaked them was place a drop of Shirley's fingernail polish or candle wax over the adjustable pots so they could not move. I also use a special color of wax on the radios I have worked on over the years so I know if anyone has messed with them and I can tell years later if it is one I have ever worked on before. Hope this helps, Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN PS, Tell Diane hi from the 1st Sargant and I

In the review, it was stated you do not need a power mike for this radio. We'll see how the Magnum 257 works out with the Imax 2000 and Kl-500. Should have total setup by Saturday week, if Imax comes in. mikefromms |

Got the Mag 257. Wow...what a radio. Whoever tuned it must have fixed that s-unit meter to read very literally, the way I like it. mikefromms |

General Longstreet, if you can find it. Galaxy 979 or 959 with whatever heat you can afford. I get great reports. Good luck my friend.
