I've heard some of the class B boxes on SSB before--they sound OK, but not great. Put one on a spec analyzer and I'll bet it isn't pretty. |

Wrk3: What radio? If you are looking for a Class B amp (with 2 of 2290's) that will do AM and SSB, look at the Magna-Force 200. If no SSB, look at the X-Force X80. X-Force and Magna-Force are same mfg. I have used a few X-Force amps before - very good quality.

I agree with Gumball. An AB biased magnaforce 200 works fine for sideband. In my opinion, all Xforce/magnaforce custom built amps being "Hand built", are a step above all other 2 or 4 pill configured (splatter boxes) amps. Another good bet, would be a Texas star 500(4x SC2849 pills), that is if you want a tradional manufactured version. I believe that most folks prefer using "Tubes" for base station SSB applications, because of the richer sound that tubes will provide, and they seem to bleed less (TVI) than transistor amps. If that's the case, then KLV amps would be the way to go. Besides they are cheaper. Quality wise I'll let someone else comment on the KLV base amps. Bottom line, Xforce and magna force amps are custom built to transmit all of your power, on the desired frequency on 11- meter 40 channel radios, whereas other amps will waste, bleed, transmit power on more than 1 channel (Harmonics). Hope this helps. Wolverine. |

Trouble is, there is no AB biased Magna Force. They are class B. Class AB is cleaner than class B on SSB. The opposite of your last statement is true in this case, if you compare a class AB KLV to a class B Magna or X-force, the KLV is the cleaner of the two. The B boxes are the ones that are going to produce more harmonics and IMD garbage, not the KLV.

Thanks for catching my typo Highlander. I meant B biased magnaforce 200. The AB biased KLV will be cleaner than a typical B box, but Wrk3 appears to be interested in transistors, as opposed to tubes, namely the X or Magnaforce base amps. If he "Wants" cleaner for SSB use, and likes tubes, then KLV would be the way to go. Wolverine. |

The only problem is, eventually a person will start having trouble locating tubes for these things. All the new SMT technology plus all the new tech that comes along, tubes are pretty much going the way of the 8-track now. I can't even find a tube in my area. Then what do you do? |

Well, I would'nt give up so easily. I'd do research and call companies like KLV, RF Parts, TC Electronics, Kenwood, Eimac Tubes, Svetlana tubes, etc. I know the story that sweep tubes are a vanishing species, even with the new technology all around us. But, I believe that amp manufacturers that produce these amps will have the stock to replace them, like KLV. You can even still find tubes for the old "Browning Eagles"(Maybe from E-bay, or The Browning Laboratories, collectors, etc.), but you may pay a premium for them, to make sure that you are not purchasing tubes that are "Flat". Hope this helps. Wolverine. |

Don't forget that there are audiophiles willing to pay for brand new hi-end amps that are tube amps, and of course professional music guitar amps such as Fender, Marshall and others that will keep tubes a viable alternative to solid state hardware -- granted that the tubes used in guitar amps are not rf tubes. |
